In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
