Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
