In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
