In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
