In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
