In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.

Mike Crosby, a Kansas City native, graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife, Sandy were high school sweethearts. Mike's father-in-law was a plumber and got Mike interested in the business. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike earned his Journeyman's License and subsequently achieved his Master Plumber's certification.

Mike trained as an apprentice at A.D. Jacobson, specializing in commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. After spending a year at KU Medical Center as a Maintenance Supervisor, he saw a chance to launch his own business.

In 2003, Mike established Crosby Plumbing Inc., he worked in new home construction as well as service. Mike continues to work in the field, offering extensive expertise from kitchen plumbing to large-scale sewer treatment plants.
