In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that immigrated from England to Kansas City and contributed to the first sewer installation six generations ago remains strong. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He left Seattle to join the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
