In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He used a trailer to haul pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
