In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife took care of phone calls at home while also raising their three kids. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.
