In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.
He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She fielded service calls, and Dick Ray took them over the phone to address the jobs. Even in those times, they provided round-the-clock service.
The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.
Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.
Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. Dick took on all the labor by himself, as he had no assistants. Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam while raising their three children. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.
They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.
