Dick Ray started his plumbing company in 1950 after serving as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI. Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles played a role in laying the first sewer in Kansas City.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Mike's father-in-law was a plumber and got Mike interested in the business. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike received his Journeyman's certification and went on to receive his Master Plumber's License.

He completed an apprenticeship at A.D. Jacobson focusing on commercial plumbing. He then moved into residential plumbing, gaining extensive experience in the local sector. After spending a year at KU Medical Center as a Maintenance Supervisor, he saw a chance to launch his own business.

In 2003, Mike established Crosby Plumbing Inc., he worked in new home construction as well as service.
