In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. During the war, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles were involved in the construction of the first sewer system in Kansas City.

Starting with only a pair of pipe wrenches, he launched his plumbing business. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even in those times, they provided round-the-clock service.

The family that came from England to Kansas City and assisted in laying the first sewer six generations ago continues to flourish. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

Even in those early days, they provided 24-hour service. The phone rang beside Dick's bed, and he was always ready to respond.

Mike Crosby, raised in the Kansas City area, completed his education at Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife, Sandy were high school sweethearts. Inspired by his father-in-law, a plumber, Mike developed an interest in the trade. Following four years of training with Plumbers Local 8, Mike earned his Journeyman's License and subsequently achieved his Master Plumber's certification.

Mike trained as an apprentice at A.D. Jacobson, specializing in commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. Following a year as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, the opportunity arose for Mike to create his own business.
