In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. His wife managed phone calls at home while raising their three children. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. They offered 24-hour service even in those early days.

The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. In 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Dick Ray was attending the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

In 1949, three years later, Dick returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he started his plumbing business and began a family with his new bride, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She often took service calls and communicated the work orders to Dick.

Inspired by his father-in-law, a plumber, Mike developed an interest in the trade. After completing four years of education at Plumbers Local 8, Mike graduated with a Journeyman's License and later obtained his Master Plumber's License.

Mike trained as an apprentice at A.D. Jacobson, specializing in commercial plumbing. He then moved into residential plumbing, gaining extensive experience in the local sector. After a year working as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, an opportunity emerged for Mike to start his own company.

In 2003, Mike established Crosby Plumbing Inc., he engaged in both new home construction and service work.
