In 1950, Dick Ray, who had recently served as the commanding officer of a Navy LCI, launched his plumbing business. He studied at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during the war. His family immigrated to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has remained ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He initiated his plumbing venture armed with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Lacking a truck, he utilized the family car for his initial service calls. He towed a trailer carrying pipes and heavy fittings. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She took service calls, and Dick Ray responded to them by phone and attended to the jobs. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

Following his service in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the ship was decommissioned after the war.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. Since he couldn't buy a truck, he began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, with an equipment trailer in tow. He managed all the work himself, without any helpers. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She regularly handled service calls and passed the work orders to Dick.

In those early days, they still provided round-the-clock service. The phone rang next to Dick's bed, and he was always prepared to answer.

Mike Crosby, a Kansas City native, graduated from Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife Sandy met in high school. Inspired by his father-in-law, a plumber, Mike developed an interest in the trade. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike earned his Journeyman's License and went on to receive his Master Plumber's License.

Mike trained as an apprentice at A.D. Jacobson, specializing in commercial plumbing. He then switched over to residential plumbing and spent many years in the local industry. After spending a year at KU Medical Center as a Maintenance Supervisor, he saw a chance to launch his own business.

In 2003, Mike established Crosby Plumbing Inc., he engaged in both new home construction and service work. Today, Mike remains active in the field, bringing a wealth of experience from kitchen sinks to major sewer treatment facilities.
