In 1950, Dick Ray, fresh from his role as commanding officer of a Navy LCI, established his plumbing business. Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. The family came to Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has been here ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Since he couldn't afford a truck, he relied on the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. Even back then, they provided 24-hour service.

The family that arrived in Kansas City from England and helped lay the first sewer six generations ago is still thriving. At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Dick Ray was a student at the University of Washington in Seattle. He moved from Seattle to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, graduating as an Ensign.

After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where the vessel was decommissioned at the war's conclusion.

Three years later, in 1949, back in his hometown of Kansas City, Dick started his plumbing business and began a family with his new wife, Shirley. He couldn't afford a truck and began his business using the family Chevy for service calls, towing an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. Shirley managed phone calls at their home in Merriam while also caring for their three kids. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

They offered 24-hour service even back then. The phone rang by Dick's bedside, and he was always ready to take the call.
