Dick Ray was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut during his military service. His family arrived in Kansas City from England during the gold rush and has stayed ever since. His uncles contributed to the installation of Kansas City's first sewer.

He began the plumbing business with just a pair of pipe wrenches. Without a truck, he used the family car for his first service calls. He transported pipes and heavy fittings in a trailer. While raising their three children, his wife handled phone calls at home. She answered service calls, and Dick Ray followed up on them by phone to handle the work. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Dick Ray was studying at the University of Washington in Seattle. He departed Seattle to enroll in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, where he graduated as an Ensign.

After serving in the South Pacific during the war, he returned to New Orleans as the commanding officer of his LCI, where his ship was decommissioned at the war's end.

In 1949, three years later, Dick Ray returned to Kansas City, his hometown, to start his plumbing business and build a family with his wife, Shirley. Unable to afford a truck, he started his business using the family Chevy for service calls, pulling an equipment trailer. Dick worked alone, handling all the labor himself. While raising their three children, Shirley answered the phone at their home in Merriam. She frequently took service calls and relayed the work orders to Dick.

Mike Crosby grew up in the Kansas City area graduating from Bonner Springs High School in 1980. Mike and his wife, Sandy were high school sweethearts. Inspired by his father-in-law, a plumber, Mike developed an interest in the trade. After 4 years of schooling through Plumbers Local 8, Mike received his Journeyman's certification and subsequently achieved his Master Plumber's certification.

Mike worked an apprenticeship through A.D. Jacobson working on commercial plumbing. He then moved into residential plumbing, gaining extensive experience in the local sector. Following a year as a Maintenance Supervisor at KU Medical Center, the opportunity arose for Mike to create his own business.

After starting Crosby Plumbing Inc. in 2003, he worked in new home construction as well as service.
