After struggling to find employment for months, I took a leap of faith and created my own company. Armed with little money, no credit, and a determination to succeed, I converted my Chevy HHR into a work vehicle and got started. Harry Berger established Standard Plumbing in 1923, installing our first coal-fed, gravity-fired furnace in Manhattan, KS. After establishing our reputation, we took on our first large project, installing plumbing for the new Wareham hotel. Yes, that Wareham hotel!

During the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, Mr. Berger ventured to Alaska to seek gold, leaving his wife in charge. When he returned from Alaska, Paul Anderson joined the company as an apprentice plumber in 1941, staying for 16 years before buying it in 1957.

Later, Paul’s sons, Rick and Dale, joined the family business. In 1958, we installed the first central air conditioning unit in the town. In January 1988, Rick purchased Dale Anderson's portion of the company.

The company was sold to four employees in 2004. Three of those employees continue to serve on the Board of Directors and supervise the company’s operations.
