John E. Shekell established the company in 1978, beginning with a single van for heating and air conditioning services. The business soon branched out into plumbing and electrical work. During the 1980s, John Shekell propelled the company forward by purchasing George Koch Sons' service center. With this purchase, Shekell became the foremost HVAC service provider in the Tri-State area. From service and new installations, Shekell ventured into design/build projects and plan/specification contracting. In 2000, Shekell purchased WSC Associates, a reputable engineering firm based in Evansville, Indiana. This addition provided Shekell with full design capabilities, reinforcing its position in the local market. In retrospect, John Shekell believes the achievements of J.E. Shekell, Inc. stem from loyal customers, devoted employees, comprehensive training, and a commitment to safety.

Kevin, who hails from Evansville, Indiana, completed his education at Reitz High School in 1988. He began his career at J.E. Shekell Inc. as a residential HVAC installer. After eight years as a service technician, he earned an Associate's degree in Applied Science in Industrial Technology from Ivy Tech.

After his time as a service technician, he transitioned to a residential HVAC sales role. Kevin later added commercial industrial HVAC/sheet metal estimator and project manager to his skill set. He pursued his education at Oakland City University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management.

In 2004, Kevin became the Vice President of Construction. In December 2006, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix.

Kevin has been married for 16 years and has two children. From 2004 to 2006, he held the position of president of the local Evansville SMACNA chapter. In January 2009, he was named President of J.E. Shekell.

Bayer's Plumbing, Inc. began in 1983 and became incorporated in 1984. The company was launched by Joe and Maria Bayer, along with Joe's brother, Mike. The business started in the residence of Joe and Maria. Inventory was kept in the garage, and the office was established in the former toy room of their children.

In 1985, they moved to a new location. They kept the office in their home and moved the inventory to a local storage facility. In January 1987, they acquired three additional vans and hired a secretary. In May 1987, the business moved to a 6,000 sq ft facility with a showroom, office, and shop capable of housing eight vans.
