In 1946, Luke Russell wrote to his brother-in-law Howard Pykles in Fairbault, MN, sharing an opportunity to purchase a paint and appliance business run by his brothers, Earl and Harmon. Having been honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps, Luke was working with his brothers post-war.

Howard sold all his possessions and left behind 25 years in the newspaper industry to relocate his family to California and acquire the business.

The business was first called ""Russell's Plumbing Hardware Appliance and Paint,"" and Howard and Luke teamed up to pursue their American Dream until 1967. Following the opening of a second store in Spring Valley, Luke became the sole proprietor of that location, while Howard maintained ownership of the original store at 4611 University Ave.

Craig, Howard's son, entered the business in 1971 and took over as the sole owner in 1977 upon his father's retirement. Currently, Craig and his son Tobias oversee the operations.

Born in Fairbault, MN, in February 1946, Craig Pykles moved to San Diego with his family at the age of 7. Craig completed his education at Crawford High School ('64) and San Diego State University ('68), earning a degree in Math and a Minor in Business. Afterward, he earned an MBA from Brigham Young University ('70) and joined the administrative services team at Arthur Andersen and Co. in West Los Angeles. Two years later, he came back to participate in the family business.

In the 40-plus years since, Craig has served thousands of customers, raised six children, and is a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren. He cherishes his family and community and is grateful to serve them both.
