In 1946, Luke Russell wrote to his brother-in-law Howard Pykles in Fairbault, MN, sharing an opportunity to purchase a paint and appliance business run by his brothers, Earl and Harmon. Having been honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps, Luke was working with his brothers post-war.

Howard sold all his possessions and left behind 25 years in the newspaper industry to relocate his family to California and acquire the business.

Initially named ""Russell's Plumbing Hardware Appliance and Paint,"" Howard and Luke partnered to chase their American Dream, which lasted until 1967. Following the opening of a second store in Spring Valley, Luke became the sole proprietor of that location, while Howard maintained ownership of the original store at 4611 University Ave.

In 1971, Craig, Howard's son, became part of the business and assumed sole ownership in 1977 when his father retired. Today, Craig and his son Tobias manage the business.

Born in Fairbault, MN, in February 1946, Craig Pykles moved to San Diego with his family at the age of 7. He graduated from Crawford High School ('64) and San Diego State University ('68) with a degree in Mathematics and a Business Minor. He later obtained an MBA from Brigham Young University ('70) and worked in the administrative services department at Arthur Andersen and Co. in West Los Angeles. After two years, he returned to contribute to the family business.

Over the past 40 years, Craig has assisted thousands of clients, raised six children, and proudly enjoys being a grandfather to 16 grandchildren. He cherishes his family and community and is grateful to serve them both.
