Company Overview

We are a local company that provides home and minor commercial heating, cooling, and pipe services. In contrast to several of our peers, we are a service-driven company. We offer our customers with options and enable them to choose when to fix or install anew.

Western was established in 1948 by Arthur Liles and Mr. Bowie in West Jefferson County, which is the reason we are called Western. They both served as service technicians at Alabama Gas Company before launching the business. The main focus of the business was gas-powered heating. Air conditioning installation and service turned into a major function of the company in 1958. In 1955, Mr. Liles took over as the sole owner of the company. He managed the business until his passing in 1972. He passed the business to his wife Myrna and his sons: Bill, Johnny, and Sid. One of his sons, Sid led the business until his retirement in 2015, at which point he handed it over to his associate Josh Durden. Mr. Durden had been with Western since 2012 and works to manage it with the same commitment on integrity and excellence that has enabled Western to thrive since 1948.

My name is Josh, and I have been with Western since 2011. I began the HVAC industry when I began assisting my father in his business at the age of 13. After finishing school, I worked during the summers for a regional HVAC contractor in Tuscaloosa while I studied at Shelton State and then the University of Alabama, where I earned a degree in Marketing. After graduating from college, I worked for two HVAC and plumbing distributors, which allowed me to gain insight into how both sides of the industry functioned and what distinguished the good contractors from the lesser ones.

I am committed to treating my team with respect, being truthful with everyone, and having pride in excellent work. We are not a high-pressure sales company, and we will not force a customer's decision for them. We only want to enlighten them about their concerns and allow them to choose the right option for themselves.

Western is the only business I CHOOSE to have do our plumbing. I always call them first, and have for years. I have never thought their prices too high, and I'm going to be in a serious hurt for an honest plumber should they ever discontinue the plumbing side of their business. Years ago my central air died, and I of course called Western. They came out, they looked it over, and the service man told me if it was his, he wouldn't fix it, he'd go with window units instead, as replacing the dead central air unit would cost too much. Said they would be happy to do the work, but it wouldn't be cost effective for me. I put in 3 window units and my power bill dropped considerably. MANY other companies would have simply charged me a lot of money for something I didn't need, to increase their profits. Instead, they chose to keep a customer happy, and with them for years to come. I wasn't the least bit surprised, because they had been dealing with me honestly for years before that.

Remember that first snowstorm of 2014???? Well, 2 hours into it our hot water heater started leaking. I had a lot of time to check out different companies and had initially decided to purchase one from Lowes. $500 and I had to install it myself...the reviews looked like it was a piece of cake. We went out to look at them and it looked cheap and flimsy. My dad insisted I call Western and they quoted me a flat rate of $1150. No thanks. But husband insisted we use them in case there was a problem with us installing it. Jay came out the next day and fiddled around and since our house is so old, there were a few installation problems. He had to use a different model because of size limitations, and while wait for his partner to bring it, totally redid the piping. He also vaccummed and cleaned the area. He installed the Ruud unit nicely and it took over 3.5 hours. I was very impressed with everything that day but the icing on the cake??? Yesterday we got a $350 rebate in the mail from Alagasco. We didn't fill out anything..they did! We will use that rebate to install a new oven now. Nice surprise!
