Ward Construction
Company Overview
Our main services include drainage, leveling, foundation repair, and retaining walls. With over 60 years of experience, you can rely on us to safeguard your home.
Our family-owned company has been serving the East Bay for three generations, covering areas like Berkeley, Richmond, Oakland, El Cerrito, Kensington, Piedmont, and more. Licensed in California as #416376.
Our company was established by seasoned builders John Ward and Bill Gilman, mentored by Jack Marchant of Marchant Construction Company. Initially, we dedicated ourselves to creating stunning custom homes, additions, and remodels.
With the arrival of the late 1960s, John Ward led the company and changed its name to John R. Ward, General Building Contractor. Our skills became increasingly in demand for addressing structural challenges such as foundation settlement, drainage, retaining walls, and floor leveling. In the mid-1970s, we embraced this transition, focusing exclusively on structural repairs.
Art Ward joined our team in 1978, infusing the company with new energy and knowledge. We rebranded as Ward Construction, Inc. in 1981, with Art Ward taking on the role of president. Thanks to his leadership, we have expanded our services and refined our expertise. After working part-time for us through college, Henry Ward, the son of Art, joined our team in 2020. He currently serves as an estimator and superintendent.

These guys did a great job replacing my entire foundation. Their estimate was spot on, I paid in installments (which was easiest, actually), and they finished exactly when they said they would from the start. They were accommodating when I asked if they could start the jack-hammering later in the morning, and they were prompt when telling me about any issues (slight wood rot by the downspouts; didn't cost much to fix). Best of all, they were affordable. Hopefully I'll never need to have a foundation replaced ever again, but if I do (on a different house maybe), I will definitely work with them again.
I hired Ward Construction to install French drains around my wife's art studio which was converted from a free standing garage. Their bid was the lowest of four by far and their work was excellent. The work was scheduled for the Monday before Thanksgiving. The heavy rains were coming and arrived Saturday. The crew seeing the forecast, wanted to complete the job before the rains came and worked Thanksgiving Day and the day after completing the job before it rained. Not a drop of water has entered the studio during the heavy rains of December.
I can't imagine many companies being so conscientious to work holidays. I highly recommend Ward Construction. I think they will give the best job at the best price. What more can anybody want?
After working with a well known engineer in the bay area to draft a voluntary seismic upgrade plan for my home in Trestle Glen in Oakland, I forwarded the plan to Ward Construction for a bid. Rick Arden called me to set up a site visit and when we spoke on the phone he asked me how many bids I intended to get. When I told him I had reached out to approximately eight contractors he said that Ward would probably not be interested in bidding on the job because they don't like to get in to bidding wars. He further told me that Ward doesn't usually bid jobs where more than three bids are sought because it usually means the home owner is just looking for the cheapest bid. I pointed out to Rick that the engineer I used was certainly NOT the cheapest in the area and that I simply wanted to make an informed decision and understand all of my options. My Dad was a life long well respected contractor and never did I see him act in any way like this. If you do a good job at a competitive price, why are you afraid of multiple bids? Ultimately, Rick did apologize for ""offending"" me. But, especially as a woman, I found the conversation to be patronizing. I asked Rick to have the owner Art Ward call me. If that call happens, I will report back.
I had a great experience working with Ward Construction, great crew and Art was very helpful in answering all my questions/concerns. This is a A+ company in my book. Thanks!
Scott G.Ward Construction did an extremely professional job putting in a French drain next to our house.
We had some moisture intrusion in our crawl space and our garage a few years back. Rick Arden came out and diagnosed the problem. He worked with our budget in coming up with a solution for both problems, and remained responsive and helpful during and after the project. The construction crew was extremely professional and courteous, and the project was completed on time and on budget.
Three years later the drain continues to work great, and our crawl space and garage are dry year round. I would recommend them to anyone else with drainage issues.
Elaine H.This company did a substantial French drain and concrete job for us to mitigate a large upslope we have to our Lamorinda area home. They delivered just as promised, on time, on budget, and left the yard just like they'd found it: undamaged.
Their pricing was far, far less than some of the other bids we got and the quality and service were really excellent. When we had questions or wanted a minor change, they took care of it with zero resistance and no follow up needed on our part. We recommended them to neighbors as well.
We did a partial foundation and full garage floor replacement with Ward in spring 2012. They did a great job, everything just as promised, on time, and with some flexibility to work around other contractors on site. Very professional, and we felt the cost was very reasonable. Best of all, the new garage floor (twice as thick as the old one, which was cracked and shifting) has stayed put for two years! Nary a crack.
kristen b.We had a great experience with everyone we dealt with at Ward Construction. We recently had them install a sump pump and subterranean drain around the perimeter of our basement which had water intrusions in heavy rains. The were very attentive to our concerns and were done quickly (despite some delays in getting the Berkeley permit guy out to inspect due to holidays etc). Best of all, it's rained a lot recently and the basement has stayed dry!
We used Ward Construction on a massive foundation underpinning project at our home in Lafayette. My experience with Ward Construction was outstanding. I strongly recommend Ward for both quality of work/service and price.
They diagnosed the problems that we're causing cracking in various potions of our house, found a cost effective structural engineer to work with us, and came in with a budget that was more competitive than any of the other four companies I talked with.
Ward started the project on time, was extremely communicative throughout each stage of the project, came in on budget and left the work site immaculate when they project was finished.
Ward also did a significant drainage project for us at an extremely competitive rate--we had the same great experience as with our first project.
D B.They may be a good construction company in general, but my experience with Rick Arden was not a good one. In an attempt to ask simple questions about a project on the phone, he was indignant and reactionary. We terminated the proposal of services as a result. I've never been inspired to post a Yelp review until now.
