A/C stopped working the other day, forced hot air system so blower on furnace wasn't working. . Called Varsity they came the next morning and said it was a bad circuit board , he thought, he called it the ""first step"" that we could try that for about 1400$ and see if that was the problem told me it would take several days to order the part. Told me couldn't put power to the motor with the model I had to see if that was in fact the issue. Furnace is 14 years old so we decided to get a new one.
Varsity person goes out to truck for 30+ minutes comes back in with a quote of 5800 for just the furnace replacement. While he was out in truck I did some quick research and everything I found for 100,000 btu high efficiency furnace was in the 3300-3800 range installed.
I questioned him on it and his response was that I better see if they were licensed and insured. I asked for a couple of quotes on specific brands that I was seeing Lenox and Rheem and he came back with 5400 and 5200 , a little bit better but still extremely high and he told me that was the best they could do.
As soon as Varsity person left I called several other contractors who confirmed the prices I was seeing the highest was 1500 less then what Varsity was charging.
A friend gave me a referral to a liscensed, insured company with 35+ years in business, guess what same Rheem furnace that Varsity quoted is being installed in my house today for 3500$ . What a rip off Varsity is, get second opinions.
Jenifer D.I had hired Varsity about 20 yrs ago for a HW heater replacement in another home. This time I called because my hot water was not hot. Joanne in the office was very polite and helpful in getting me an appointment quickly. Clint came & explained how the boiler worked and that it would need a new coil. Unfortunately this unit is no longer made and the part had to be special ordered. Once the part came in he returned and the coil was replaced. Other issues popped up affecting the heat that required additional repair. He was on time, professional, courteous and worked diligently to get me heat & hot water. I would use varsity again, and recommend them.
I think it's only fair to let everyone know that after my scathing post regarding Varsity they have finally called to apologize and did refund my $97 service fee.
Eric S.I only put 1 star b/c they don't offer 0 stars as an option. First off, they made me wait 8 hours before they came, from there, it was a complete screw job. $650 for the visit & to fix 1 leaky pipe. I seriously urge anyone in need of plumbing in NYC to find another place. A truly disgusting experience.
I also had a horrible experience with this company especially Andrew who works for them he is a complete idiot who shouldn't even have a job! The company showed up when they wanted and left whenever they wanted and made a mess of my home!!!!!
They are a rip off. They charge outrageous prices and don't do a thorough job. Call anyone else but them.
I had a bad experience with Varsity Plumbing. Details below, but here's the short version: Varsity overcharged me for what should have been a simple job, left a hole in my kitchen wall (adjacent to the bathroom), attempted to overcharge me for the consultation fee, and were consistently late to appointments. Everything about my experience suggests Varsity is dishonest and unreliable. I recommend you read my story before booking them for a job.
Here are the details:
- Hours late to my first appointment, a consultation where they were supposed to assess the problem.
- The plumbers who showed up to that consultation tried to tell me the consultation fee was much larger than what I was told it would be. I had to call the office on the spot to get them to clarify (they confirmed the fee wasn't nearly as large as the workers said it was).
- My problem was a leaky shower head. Their solution was to replace the entire shower body for around $900. They took advantage of me (a young woman who they presumed didn't know better).
- When I had my dad call to have them explain to him why they were charging so much, they said it was because they needed to replace the valve. They never actually replaced the valve, though, so that explanation was a lie.
- Varsity was an hour late to their second appointment, even though I made it clear that my building could only shut off the water in the building for them for a few hours, and that they needed to be there on time to make sure they got the work done.
- After installing a new shower body, I found a hole on the other side of the wall, in my kitchen. It so happens that my kitchen isn't in good shape anyway, but what if my kitchen had been in good condition? They would have left a hole in my kitchen wall when really they were working in the bathroom.
This is the worst company I have ever dealt with. For 2 months they have been trying to fix my ac with no success whatsoever. In fact more than 1 time they have broken things more instead of fixing them, and on top of that their warranty doesn't cover half the things they come and do. These guys are a total ripoff and me and my father have had enough, we are close to filing a lawsuit against these idiots. DO NOT WASTE A SINGLE DIME ON THESE FOOLS. Trust me do some research and spend elsewhere.
They are terrible! Find someone else!!! I hired them because I needed an exterior plumber to change the tap valve to the water supply to my building required by DEP. There are so few companies that do this kind of work it was almost impossible to find someone to do it. They were so confused with what needed to be done, they missed the first appointment, their office staff was incompetent and very rude on several occasions, sent offensive and accusatory emails to my architect. They overlooked part of the drawings that required a floor drain and then wanted to charge $2800 more to already almost $7000. Another plumber is doing the drain for $450. What work was done by the plumbers themselves was done correctly and the plumbers themselves were very nice, however.
Paul S.I have used Varsity plumbing and heating several times (small and large jobs). Their personnel are friendly and neat in everything they work on and install. Their work is always complete. Office personnel are also excellent.
