Trust Best Pick Reports or 5 Star Reports for honest referrals.

Facing a plumbing disaster that can’t wait? Reach out to Universal Home Experts for prompt repairs. Since 1992, we’ve been Houston’s trusted home service provider. Our technicians are trained, background-checked, and drug-screened. No hidden fees—just honest, transparent quotes.

Universal Home Experts began remodeling historic Houston homes. Neighborhoods like Garden Oaks and the Museum District shaped our expertise. We pivoted to specialized repairs in 2004.

Owner Ed became an electrician in 1986, following his grandfather’s footsteps. He worked in industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. But residential remodeling stole his heart. When he launched Universal in 1992, he specialized in historic homes. Decades of experience translate to smarter, safer repairs for you.

. My husband found the company Universal Home Experts via Angie's List.
Sam S. came out to our home to install lighting fixtures. Sam took time to explain the the work needed. I was not aware how extensive the work would be. I appreciated the time he spent with me along with no pressure.

Reason we called:
1. Dishwasher was not turning on
2. Disposal not turning on
Not a plumbing issue

Day 1: My wife looks this company up and it showed good reviews so we went with it. They were very kind and knowledgeable. We were told that they are not the cheapest but we are paying for quality work and a long lasting product and everything will work when they are finished. As they were inspecting the electrical box he needed to test to see if it was the breaker shorting out so he switched the line to another on. Sure enough when he did that the disposal was working but the dishwasher did not. As he was eliminating problems he caused the washer to stop working. He said sorry and then continued to tell us the problems we had. We needed a new breaker box in the end and went ahead with the work (6,000$). The workers came and installed the new breaker box, fixed the problem with the disposal and "fixed" the dishwasher. I say that because when they installed an outlet for the dishwasher to plug into, that caused it to not fit in its original place. I told the guy who was working on the dishwasher, but he just continued on with his work and left the dishwasher out(after telling him it would not fit).As they were fixing the dishwasher they then broke a water line.they called, and I advised him of what happened and he asked if I wanted to fix it myself or if I wanted to get one of there plumbers. I told him I wanted a plumber. The plumber arrived and said that it would be an hour to get the part and fix it. He left and was gone for over 2 hours. It was evening by this time..They fixed the water drain pipe but still did not fix the issue where it would not fit in its original place causing drawers not to open..Right before they left I asked if they had labeled all the breakers. Sure enough I get told "oh did you want to do that?" these guys clearly did not want to stick around and finish what they started. I was told that the wiring for the dryer was not correct and as long as we don't use the dryer all day long over and over again we would be ok (exact words) and to expect the dryer to flip the breaker if we do that. After that and the box now labeled they left. Later my wife tried the dishwasher. As soon as she turned it on she noticed something wrong, It was leaking water all over the floor and a bad burning smell. I then tried to start a load for drying and within a couple seconds it shut off. I went to the breaker box, flipped the switch and tried again thinking maybe it was just a hiccup. Sure enough what they said before was completely inaccurate and even turning the dryer on would flip the switch.

Problems after day 1
1.Dishwasher leaking water on floor
2.Dishwasher does not fit in same spot
3.Drawers do not open(due to dishwasher)
4.Dryer does not stay on.

Day 2: Called Universal Home Experts. They arrived shortly after with a million apologies and there word to have it all fixed by the end of the day. As they checked the house for the reason the dryer wasn't working he advised us that it was because aluminum wiring and not the correct size for an electrical dryer and we now need new wiring so the power wont shut off the dryer. We were told that the "boss" only wants to charge us for the wiring since they had to come back and fix everything. The cost for just the wiring was over 1000. Seemed a little steep but at this point, but had no choice unless we wanted to hire a new company and wait while water was all over the place and unable to dry clothes..We agreed and they came that same day and repaired/fixed everything.

Day 3: after we had our nice new wiring I decided to go out and get new outlets and light switches to kind of update the house. As I was turning the power off to the areas I needed I noticed I didn't have a living room according to the breaker box..I decided to just shut everything off and continue with what I was doing, as I did not have time to go though all the breakers. When I got to the back part of the house (kids room) it was getting a little warm so I just decided to turn the AC on and a few rooms to get the air flowing. Sure enough the breaker box was labeled wrong, the kids room was on wrong breaker, the fridge was on wrong breaker, and no living room. Called AGAIN got it fixed three days later.

Sam is very nice and knowledgeable.
The workers need serious supervision.

Universal Home Experts continues to impress my wife and I every time they come out. Big or small problem, they are always very respectful, helpful, and knowledgable. Most recently we have had a string of Plumbing related issues, and their plumber, Van, is very nice and helpful- always willing to show me the issue and help understand all the options to fixing the problem. I never feel like they are gouging me on price or taking advantage of my ignorance. I would recommend them for any plumbing, electrical, or HVAC issue as I have used them for all three over the past few years.

UPDATE to my review of 7/20/2015 (not enough space to add to original review):

Upon hearing my complaints, the owners of this business did try to make amends. They sent me an edible bouquet and sent a plumber out to flush out my water heater for free. It was the same problematic plumber who came before. He ran the discharge hose out to my driveway, which was only a few months old at the time, and put a huge rust stain on it, which I had to pressure wash so hard to get out, it took some of the concrete off (and stain is still faintly visible). He could have run the hose into the grass or into one of two highly visible PVC cleanouts for my sewer line that were actually closer than the spot on the driveway where he discharged it. Pure carelessness. I don't think this company is callous or deliberately dishonest, but they are overpriced and their employees are not the best.

I had my troubled AC serviced by Kevin from Universal Home Experts. The unit has been having the same problem every year since its installation. Multiple guys from several companies came in and went away with no real solutions. Some of them were simply sloppy and irresponsible. Kevin was capable, considerate and efficient in solving the immediate problem and suggested a reasonable long-term solution. I was really impressed and glad to find Universal Home Experts at the end.

Called UHE to come out and bid a job to replace a ceiling fan and light fixture on high ceilings. I would supply the fixtures,My first clue should have been when they told me that there would be a $60.00 charge for an estimate, but they said this would go towards they job if I hired them, so I thought how bad could it be??

The Gentleman they sent out was Oscar. He was extremely professional and polite. Then the quote came in.... $1142.00 to do the job which he stated would take about 3 hours!! That is 380.66 per hour!! I think they must have lost their minds somewhere along the way. I did not hire them.

Do yourself a favor...get several estimates before hiring this company.

We had a great experience with Oscar. He was professional and quickly diagnosed a problem with several breakers in our panel. He gave us a few repair options of varying cost without any pressure. Would definitely recommend Universal Home a Experts.

This is the biggest rip off company I have ever seen. I needed 2 breakers, 4 screws, antioxidant paste and labels. About $80.00 worth of material. I was quoted $1188.00 for something that would have taken about 1 hour. Then on top of that they tried to sell me some stupid membership. People call someone else, this is a rip off company.
