Dec 2015: Our existing heat pump (hp) was short cycling & we had another contractor (on a coupon) come out. They advised we had no refrigerant left & probably needed to replace our 11+/- year old coil & heat pump.

Asked Universal to come out for their diagnosis & they confirmed it. (They were unaware we had a previous diagnosis.)

After some initial confusion with the quote for a new hp & coil Steffen stepped in & provided a clean, professional, competitive quote.

Of note; we didn't feel we needed to replace the existing thermostat so Steffen reduced the quote (as did others) to reflect the lowered cost. However, he was also very helpful and advised our existing thermostat could be set to enable programming at no cost. Others did not point that out &/or tried to sell us a new thermostat.

The install was timely & professional. At Steffen's suggestions & with Russell's expertise minor workmanship issues with the previously existing duct work were addressed/improved (at no additional cost). Both Russell & Chris were professional & did a great install. Their install is workman-like & a marked improvement over the previous install (of the old unit).

Whilst Steffen was here we also discovered the existing unit had been set to switch over from hp to back-up heat at 45 degrees. The thermostat is now set to switch over at 35 degrees with the new unit which will lower our gas bill much more than it will raise our electric bill.

We had one minor follow-up issue with an air-flow leak on the coil around the seal where the access panel attaches to the coil cabinet (the inside unit). Within an hour of reporting it Russell had that resolved with an additional strip of neoprene inside the access panel cover.

We had received 3 quotes in all & felt Universal was the best balance of all-around most professional, forthright & competitive.

In our experience Universal has always & also been very responsive & professional.

When we were living in Richmond, VA, we separately replaced our a/c and a/c-heat pump unit over the last 3 years, both times hiring Universal. They are excellent! Not only are they easy to work with in terms of scheduling, Steffan gives honest estimates and suggestions, and the team does a great job with installation. Russell and Scott work quickly, are quiet, and are very easy to have working in the house. I strongly recommend using Universal!

Our emergency/auxillary heat would run constantly and the system was not heating the house properly. Most of the time the vents were just blowing cold/warm (rather than hot) air.

We had Universal come out to look at it and perform the repairs. They replaced the compressor and a belt in the outside unit. They did an excellent job and all the work was completed in one day. Since the repairs, our electric bills have dropped by about 35%. I wish I had called them sooner!

Universal is an excellent company. They do quality work and reasonable prices. I would definitely hire them again for any HVAC needs and would ABSOLUTELY recommend them without hestitation!!!
