When I talked to Russ the morning my water heater broke (bad heating element),
he postponed his non-urgent jobs and was able to fix it that same day.
(GE Warranty told me what part I needed and Home Depot helped me find it.)
Russ quickly verified the problem and gave me a fair estimate (they charge by the job not the hour). They worked so effectively and efficiently while good-naturedly answering all my questions that the job was completed and cleaned up in no time!

I have been using Top Hat Plumbing since around 2003 when we had a barn put in with absolute satisfaction. The prices and service are great and prompt. Recently, to check things out, we got a quote from another plumber to replace a hot water tank that was leaking, then called in Russ with Top Hat Plumbing. His price was significantly lower and the quality is exemplary. Today, he finished another job for me. This will be the only call I make from now on.

He takes advantage of distressed customers, charges exorbitant prices knowing they need help right away. He would look around at your house and decide you have money then raises his price. Never again will I use him.

Called Russ after my plumber friend could not do my job because of a vacation. We had a burned out thermocouple on a GE water heater. No hot water for 4 days for a family of four waiting for the special part from GE. Russ and his son Logan came out and fixed it within an hour. I felt his price was fair and that he was a hard working, honest businessman. He explained how everything works to a ""non-handyman"" person like me. I will definitely call him the next time I need a great plumber.

I have used Russ now twice. Once for a potential water heater problem and then for a clogged drain line. Here are a few things I really like about him:
1. He is fast and responsive. If you don't have hot water or your kitchen sink line is clogged, you need to get it fixed fast.
2. He explains what he is going to do and then teaches you how to make the simple repairs yourself. He will tell you which repairs you can do yourself (with tricks of the trade) and which ones to be careful on (that means hire an expert).
3. I don't feel I am being taken advantage of. He will not do extra work or make suggestions just to put money in his own pocket. He only does what needs to get done and gives excellent recommendations about potential improvements should further problems occur.

I found Top Hat Plumbing on Yelp and gave them a try based on the positive reviews. Now, there is no reason for me to search for a Plumber on Yelp any more. I have found my Plumber!

We've called Russ for all of our plumbing needs for a few years - he's always been the ultimate professional. He knows his stuff and is very thorough, explaining things as he goes. He treats us as long term customers, not a one time call. For example, I left a voicemail for him Saturday morning at 8:30. He called by 9:00 and was at my home by 9:30 with an excellent fix.

I had major problems with another plumber who repaired my water heater. Russ evaluated the problem, checked for warranty information and recommended that PG&E come out to check line pressure because of the way the burner was acting. PG&E ultimately issued a hazard warning for the old heater and capped it off.

I ended up replacing the old water heater to be safe. Because of the shoddy repair job done before I didn't feel comfortable throwing more money at it.

Because the other company had replaced parts that were not, as they indicated, required by code, Russ directed me to the Ca State contractors license board for direction in case I wanted to file a complaint - which I ended up doing. He even offered to come back later to haul the old heater away so I could keep it for awhile in case it was needed for inspection! He kept his word! Can't say enough about his professionalism and work ethics. Particularly like that he charges by the job not by the hour.
