I, along with my nephew Michael Hartman, own Thos. E. Clark. Prior to our takeover in 1991, I managed Hartman Plumbing. With over 40 years in the plumbing industry, I started as an apprentice and worked my way up.
Michael has over 20 years of experience in the heating and air conditioning field. Michael started his journey in the industry as an apprentice following his graduation from Salisbury University in 1990.
Both of us stay updated on the latest technologies while maintaining the core values that have made Thos. E. Clark a trusted name in the Washington DC area.

Wonderful experience both times with Chris and his helper fixing and replacing both toilets. I appreciate their quick response when my toilet was leaking last week. It is nice to have senior citizens well served and the discount is appreciated. Very pleasant and knowledgeable plumbers. I love my two new toilets! My next door neighbors use your company and I decided to follow them!
I do not doubt, but am nonetheless mystified, by the number of negative reviews about Thos. E. Clark. In my 14 years in DC, we have had them for both large and small jobs. They are alwys done withe the very highest level of skill and professionalism. I don't know if the pricing is ""higher than it should be"" as I have no means to compare. I do know that I spent 35 years in a very competitive and often reviled business (new car dealer, service and body shop) and delivering consistently proper service requires a staff that is well-trained, committed, customer conscious, experienced and, frankly, well paid. Thos. E. Clark, in our experience, is first-rate.
Cary O.Fantastic, prompt and affordable. Gene and his assistant were courteous, efficient and worked hard to diagnose problems I was having with sinks, a bathtub and a shower and took care of everything while scrupulously observing COVID-19 protocols. Highly recommend.
Horrible service. The technician came to repairs leak in utility room.
He told that he fixed.
Few days later the leak happens again, the same tech Ian came back and claimed that it was another issue.
He was doing a very sloppy job, that now I need to hire somebody else.
Very disappointed!
Natalie Z.No one in the history of home ownership wants to hear the words ""your boiler needs to be replaced"". No one. But after 30 years our gas boiler had finally given up the ship. And lucky for us friend had recommended Thomas E Clark to us a couple of years before. They are professional, efficient and they explained exactly what was needed. They installed the new boiler, took the titanic relic away with them and cleaned up the work site. Fabulous. Courteous and professional staff!
Etai M.I called Thomas E Clark to fix my A/C after it stopped working. They offered to come the day I called (Monday) evening which was great, and asked for a $104 overtime charge rate in addition to any service provided. It seemed fair and I agreed. The person came and fixed a clogged pipe quickly. When I looked at the receipt ($~450), I noticed that I was also charged for an overtime rate on the service. So overtime charge, and then additional overtime rate which turned up to be 30% more. This I was not told. Few days later, the A/C stopped working again. So I called the same company and they said they will send someone, but again are asking for an overtime charge and an overtime rate. I agreed thinking that if they will come back to fix their work they may not charge me again. The new technician said he is diagnosing a new problem, this time with the A/C unit wiring, and will have to replace the wires. He did replace them and got the A/C running again, and charged $~600 for the service. He also recommended that in the long run I should add protection to the wires and he will send me a quote. The next day, the A/C stopped working again. When I called the company, they claimed that it is because I haven't added their wire protection and it is my fault (even though this is not something that the technician said is necessary immediately and definitely did not imply that the A/C can't work for even 24 hours without). With that approach, and while I should have insisted they come and fix the problem without charging me, I decided that enough is enough and I will take the sunk cost and call another company. The other company came the same day, fixed a completely different problem and added refrigerant all for less than 400$ and A/C is working flawlessly since. Will not call them again.
I recently had Thomas E Clark replace my HVAC units in my house and detached garage, After a thorough examination and explanation of our needs we were off and running. Everything went as explained, areas worked were clean units are working great. From the first call to the final follow up everyone was very professional and responsive. I will definitely use them in the future and highly recommend Thomas E Clark to anyone in need!
We have used Thomas E Clark before, and so I called them to service a toilet. They came the next day, when they said they would. Davon was totally suited out in protective gear: face mask, gloves and booties for his shoes. Turns out we needed a new toilet, and he had one on the truck! He replaced ours immediately, left a totally clean space and was out the door in an hour. I call that excellent service, at a reasonable price. Thank you, Clark!
Ian G.If Thomas E. Clark Plumbing can get you in a situational corner, they'll take you to the cleaners. They charged us at a rate of at least $877 per hour. They might also walk off with your property like they did ours.
For same-day service of (1) a leaking faucet-sprayer hose and (2) a clogged drain, they charged us $1,509. They said they didn't have the right fitting for a new hose, so the only solution was to replace the entire faucet for $999. They said it would take days to find the right fitting, leaving our tenants without a working kitchen sink for who knows how many days. That was the situational corner they got us in. While the leak stopped if the faucet was off, a good landlord needs to keep their tenant's utilities working. Unscrupulous contractors know that and will exploit it.
According to HomeGuide, you can expect to pay ""about $125 to $170 per hour when you need emergency plumbing services."" For 1.5 hours of work, Clark Plumbing charged us $1,509. Given that the awful faucet they installed to fix a hose leak retails for $193, their rate was at least $877 per hour!
On top of that, the Clark plumber walked off with our higher-end kitchen faucet that he removed. According to him and our tenant, its only defect was that its replaceable hose sprung a leak. He never asked if he could take our faucet, and not being on site ourselves, we were not able to notice and stop him. I'd have assumed that, like other contractors, he'd leave any of our property he worked on, or ask if we wanted it to be disposed of. Instead, on his own volition he decided our property was at his discretion.
That work was done on a Saturday evening (Dec 21), and I called within 24 hours asking them to return the faucet. I was told they disposed of it. However, given that the county dump was closed the entire time and that Sunday trash collection is unlikely, it seems improbable that it could have been irrevocably disposed of. Moreover, it's impossible to believe a plumber would not be aware that he was walking off with a perfectly good higher-end contemporary faucet that only needed a new hose. My second call back on Sunday, asking how they could have irrevocably disposed of it on the weekend was not returned.
Thomas E. Clark Plumbing are bandits with a wrench who ripped us off in every way they could.
Terrible service and rude staff! Sent a very ill employee to fix air conditioning. Had my husband try to help him do his work. Said he was sending another employee out same day but we were told otherwise by the manager of Clark. He wanted to send back the same ill employee the next day. When I complained, he hung up in me. Horrible inconsistent service over the past 2 years.
