Massive rip off. Truly the most unprofessional business and workers. Do not under any circumstances use this business. Sun Heating and cooling sent a tech to my home in order to see if my furnace was the source of a leak. When it was instantly determined the tech could not help me (He never touched the furnace, and had me take off filter covers to check myself), the tech offered to try tightening a corroded pipe with the leak in question. The simple dripping leak that was once able to be contained turned into a broken open pipe with water gushing. Everyone makes mistakes but this Tech then implied he isn't responsible at all for his foolish move because he ""Asked permission"", and he can't help. I had to hustle and figure out where my water shutoff was while this worker stood next to me. I had to call a plumber and pay for them to rush out. After all the mess Sun Heating and cooling still charged me over $120 to come to my house and break a pipe. When I called Sun's offices to complain I was told, ""I'm so sorry we don't do bad business and the owner will call you tonight or tomorrow"". The owner never called and the payment was processed. I'm sure they sometimes do good business, but I didn't get to experience that, and I suggest avoiding this business at all costs. The worker that came to my house, while kind, was not forthcoming with the massive mistake he made, and tried to report the leak as ""Already existing"", which is true, a small amount of water was dripping out of a pipe at a constant rate, but the issue wasn't an open pipe with water free flowing. Something that could have been a quick fix by getting a plumber to my house, turned into a plumbing emergency.
Katy O.Absolutely do not use this company. We paid $200 for an on call tech to come out since it was a Saturday. He told us we'd need to purchase a brand new furnace as the gas valve was broken and there were pinholes in the heat exchanger. He explained that fixing the valve would be an expensive fix because of the part cost and work involved. He turned off the power to our Nest and said they'd call us on Monday. That very day, we were able to locate a new gas valve and have a different business install. They also did an inspection and found nothing wrong with our furnace other than the broken gas valve. Total cost was $290. Sun told us the new furnace that we'd ""need"" starts at 1k. Sun will try to scam you into a huge purchase instead of simply repairing the issue. I would never recommend them as they are completely untrustworthy. I am sure this is standard practice for them and I will make sure to spread the word to friends and family.
Good company. Had a small hiccup with the installation but Sun was responsive and completed the job extremely well.
They came out to do regular maintenance on my furnace. After 2 minutes the apprentice told me to come downstairs and look at something. He was being trained by the technician, (Ash). The tech Ash showed me a picture of my heat exchanger. He stated it had a crack in it. He proceeded to shut my furnace down. I asked him to not do that, without any further testing. He was adamant and started to push a new furnace on me. I told him that was something I could discuss with the office. One picture wasn't satisfactory to me. He didn't comply, and disabled my furnace.
For 10 years I had used this company. They had always been very efficient and respectful. I was without heat for eight days in the middle of winter. I will avoid this company in the future. I did get a second and third opinion. The second opinion I received was interesting. He thought the pictures might not be from my furnace. However, I had to get a new furnace and I'm done with the furnace situation. My heating was perfect and I didn't have any issues with carbon monoxide. The cracked heat exchanger seemed very questionable to me. I have a carbon monoxide detector in my home and it never registered any kind of reading. It just takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch.
I feel obligated to write this review to warn others who use this company. Hopefully this will help prevent other people from being scammed, as we almost were. Their technician was a con-man, who tried to use scare tactics to influence us to buy a whole new furnace when the reality was a minimal cost to repair.
To provide the backstory:
Our furnace stopped working suddenly on a Friday night. The status light indicated a ""limit circuit fault"". We called around Saturday morning to try to find someone to come out and diagnose the issues that day. We ended up getting someone from Sun heating and cooling to come out.
The technician arrived and started working on the unit. After a while, he called us downstairs and explained that he found a lot of corrosion on the heat exchanger. He went on to explain in an ominous manner that it would cost at least $2,000 to replace the heat exchanger. He tried to convince us that we would be better off to buy a whole new unit, which would cost us anywhere from $6,000 to $8,000.
At this point, we did not realize we were being scammed, but we were somewhat cautious about proceeding with such a massive expense. We decided to have him provide a formal quote to replace the unit and that we would spend the time to reach out to other contractors for quotes to compare against.
Next, we reached out to Robin Aire to schedule a trip to come out and provide a quote. The technician arrived and we began to explain the diagnosis and solution that we had previously received. He was astonished to hear that we had been told that it would be a $2,000 cost to replace the heat exchanger. He then explained that the heat exchanger would be covered under the manufacturer's (Bryant) warranty and that the cost to replace should be very minimal. He also went on to express that our furnace is a very good unit, in good condition, and that there should be no reason that we don't get another 5 years out of it. That being the case, we scheduled a technician from Robin Aire to come out and replace the heat exchanger and check for any other potential future issues. He replaced the heat exchanger, cleaned the pilot light and the drain, and that was it. Our heater is now fully functional and no further issues. At a cost of only $211.
I should also note that Sun heating and cooling is a Carrier brand supplier. Bryant is owned by Carrier. There is no reason that Sun's technician would not know that the heat exchanger is covered under warranty. He was clearly a con-artist trying to take advantage of the situation.
We tried to call Sun heating and cooling to explain the situation, but they brushed it off and said that they did nothing wrong. This leaves us with the impression that their management encourages this type of scamming behavior. That being the case, I feel it is my duty to make this issue public, in hopes that it might prevent someone from being scammed by this company in the future.
In conclusion, I highly recommend that people do not use this company. Had we listened to the technician from Sun heating and cooling, we would have had to spend at least $5,000. Instead, we called another company and only had to pay a small fraction of the cost at $211.
I gave it one star because I had to. If I could, I would have given it zero stars. Service tech came out, was very unclear about what was needed, left us believing that we needed a new furnace. Was going to charge us $1500.00 labor on a warranty item. We got it done for $200.00 elsewhere. Will NEVER use, recommend or refer them to anyone I want to keep as a friend. When I received a call back the supervisor/manager didn't even have the decency to call me.
Alisa C.Dependable service. I've used Sun for 25 years and they do a great job. I've been happy with their maintenance of both my heating and A/C. I recently purchased two new furnaces and the guys came in, did the job, cleaned up and all is well.
Came out to service a 3 year old AC unit that another company had installed, and been dealing with issues for THREE YEARS, and found the issues and repaired them right away.
It took him less than an hour to diagnose, and come up with a plan. About another hour to take apart the unit and fix it. (That another company couldn't figure out after installing it improperly, THREE YEARS ago.)
We also initially requested a quote for a Space Pack style unit for our second story and we were promised we wouldn't need it now that the AC was working properly. I was very skeptical, but now even our master bedroom is 67° when the thermostat reads 67°. Plus the AC unit is no longer grinding or stalling.
We should have called Sun first. Learn from my mistake!
Disrespectful, rude, chauvinistic management.
We had a recent terrible experience- It started in July the day after I brought my newborn twins home from the hospital and our air conditioning went out. We called the company and they were going to send somebody out but because the temps were getting so high inside the house, we were told to take our newborns elsewhere, which is just the beginning of the inconveniences. They came out, we paid the technician right then, and the air conditioner was fixed later that night, so we thought. One month later we were in the exact same situation. The ac went out again and we had to take our 2 infants out of our home. When I called to ask them to return and fix what wasn't fixed the first time, I was told that there would not be a charge for this return visit. I was also told by the technician, who couldn't do anything when he got there because the unit was frozen, that there would not be a charge for that visit. So the next day another technician came out and eventually got it working. One week later I get two bills from Sun heating and cooling. One bill for the return visit that I was already told we wouldn't need to pay for. And one bill for a much higher amount than we were told when the technician was at the house. I read the notes on the bill and there was a discrepancy in the tech's write up versus what was itemized and charged. So I called to discuss with the company to ask that they correct their billing mistake for the return visit and ask about the charges I wasn't clear on. When I spoke with Lee, the manager, he was the rudest, most condescending and disrespectful man that I have spoken to as a customer. Not to mention sexist. He interrupted me from the moment we got on the phone, spoke condescendingly to me, and wouldn't listen to my concerns. I had told him I was ready to pay, as I had for the first tech visit but I wanted to understand the charges, but he just wanted to argue or ""send the bill to collections if I'm going to keep taking up an hour of his time"" after 11 minutes of being on the phone. However the most outrageous part was when he told me ""you need to talk to your husband and have him explain this to you"". These bills were addressed to me and my name is the only name on the account. The insinuation that I needed a man to be able to understand and handle this situation is so offensive. I could not believe that someone could be so blatantly disrespectful and misogynistic. Even more shockingly and infuriating was that the owner of the company, Henry, was no more understanding nor apologetic when I told him how his manager spoke to me. He said ""that doesn't sound like Lee"". This is how they treat a customer of 21 years after THEY make an error and take 4 trips to solve an issue they claim to be pros at. Do not waste your time or money supporting this business.
