Larry's father passed away when he was in his teenage years. He had little interest in academic performance, and his mother had a tough time to provide for the family. Without a clear path, he felt lost about his life. A buddy asked him come along to Lancaster for a technical school admissions test. Reluctant to go, he went along. Once there, they talked him into taking the entrance test. In a twist of fate, his friend was not accepted, but Larry succeeded and enrolled at Thaddeus Stevens Trade College. Eventually, he learned that they specialized in helping underprivileged families access education and trade skills. Larry graduated from Stevens as the ""Most Outstanding Plumber."" He went back to his hometown of Penn Township and added a wealth of knowledge to that!
