I found Speake's Plumbing via references on NextDoor, and called them for the first time yesterday, explaining it was not an emergency but looking to get on their schedule as a new customer for a slow toilet leak. Rusty said they could come the next day for sure, but asked if somebody would be home in case they had something open up later that day I called. Well, they did come the same day, and Garlan immediately identified a potentially serious problem with the drain pipe and flange, saved the day (and my nerves) with a highly-skilled and thorough multi-step repair, and did it all for an extremely reasonable price. I was particularly impressed with how Garlan made a point of showing me everything he found, explaining the situation and the fix in detail, showing me the repair job before replacing the toilet, and generally being the consummate trustworthy professional. Speake's is our new plumbing company from here forward!

They do a good job but get the cost in writing before they start the job or you could wind up paying more than what you're quoted over the phone. 4 stars for a job well done and 4 stars for Rusty resolving a billing issue with the bbb with creative writing and a refund. Good Job and thank you everyone!

This has been the worst experience I have had with any service company.
They made unnecessary repairs to 2 warehouse heaters that we do not use without any approval. The bill came almost to $1000.
Be very careful!

I thought it was pretty serious when my HVAC guy told me there was water in my gas lines. My largest and still unanswered questions is "how much water needs to be in the line to get all the way up into the attic".

In any case this situation left us without gas, a furnace, or a hot water heater.

I called in for a plumber on monday. It was raining and there was likely going to be digging necessary, so Rusty scheduled us a few days out and quoted us about a thousand dollars over the phone.

Morning of the appointment came. Rusty needed to reschedule. He was unable to provide a more specific timeslot then "afternoon". He said his crew was on the same type of job that they started the day prior. This was mildly annoying given that we had waited for several days (due to rain) but I was not going to find a contractor to come out in a more timely manner now, so I went with it.

Our plumbers came early afternoon thursday. Blew water out of the gas line. Brought a few things up to code. Tied off some unused non-problematic lines for funzies. 4.5 man hours * 2 still no root cause.

Day two involved an overnight consultation with an expert that dialed in the root cause. We dug up a riser and replaced it and by late afternoon had tested the system clean. City of garland signs off on it. Atmos come by, fails the work due to water in the pipes, and red tags the system again.

I'm $1600 into plumbing at this point, including 4.5 hours of largely wasted time (which I paid without questioning). I called Rusty, he spoke with the inspector and spoke with my wife and I separately.

From a customer service perspective, I expect that plumbers will come out and resolve the situation immediately - Rusty informs me he has availability in 3 days - on monday. Additionally I expect that Speakes will complete the work without additional cost. Rusty proactively informs me that the work monday will be at my cost - despite the fact that all the other work which did not fix the problem was already at my cost.

All in all I was disappointed that Speakes was not more proactive about resolving a situation where a customer did not have heat or hot water. Its not the customers responsibility to pass Atmos inspection or remove water from the lines. If you are going to charge me $1600 for doing these things you probably should complete the work.

Speake's Plumbing is locally owned and operated, and that is a very important attribute for us. From the time we called to discuss the work we needed done to the end of the job, everyone was courteous, professional, on time, and the rates were competitive. We have used Speake's Plumbing two times, and they will be our first call the next time we a need plumber. Thanks Rusty, Lucas, Dakota, and Daniel for jobs well done.

Very impressed with this company. They came out quickly and on time to replace a leaking outside faucet. The fee was extremely reasonable and quality of work was excellent. I will definitely use them for any future plumbing needs.

I would use extreme caution when dealing with this company. I called to get a quote for a specific problem for my elderly parents who were without gas until the problem could be resolved. Initially I was given a very reasonable quote over the phone (replacing a metal riser, city permit, and city inspection). The same work quote was provided by 3 other plumbers who came to the house to provide estimates. The quote given by Speake's was in the middle of the road compared to the other quotes that were given. We decided to go with Speake's because of availability and the reviews I read online.

When Speake's Plumbing arrived they told my parents that they needed to replace the entire line to the meter(which they stated was metal)and the cost of the job more than tripled. I advised my parents that we go with any of the other plumbers who provided quotes. Ultimately my parents selected a different plumber to fix the issue. The newly selected plumbing company arrived and replaced the metal riser. They then stated the line to the meter was poly not metal and did NOT need to be replaced. They also showed my parents the poly line in the ground to prove it was not metal and did not need to be replaced. Speake's charged my parents $130 for the quote at the residence. In summary, Speake's had no issues attempting to charge thousands more to an elderly couple that were in a tight spot. These people seem to operate dishonestly. Beware.

Late last night I discovered my kitchen sink leaked quite a bit of water at the base of the faucet and also underneath the sink whenever I turned the faucet on. So I called Speakes plumbing first thing in the morning since they had the most positive reviews in my neighborhood. I really needed my sink fixed today because I was having a party the following day and needed to be able to use the kitchen sink. The man I spoke with was very pleasant and said he thought he could get someone there in the afternoon but couldn't guarantee it. So I called a few other places and they were booked til next week. Called Speakes back and the guy said he would do his best to get someone out today for me.

Then about 2 hours later he called and said he found someone who could come my way right then. I was like Great! And thinking what a good company...they may be making a customer for life here.

When the plumber shows up I walk him into the kitchen explaining the leak as I go. He pulls out the sprayer hose and turns the faucet on and water starts dripping out of the sprayer into the sink. Then he takes a wrench from his pocket and turns the nut or gasket or whatever it's called a half turn to tighten it. Bam! Problem solved no more leak. Took him all of a minute. He didn't have to take anything apart or even get under the sink. On the one hand I'm kind of embarrassed it was such an easy fix but I'm a single woman and know nothing about plumbing. On the other hand I'm thankful it wasn't something really bad.

Then he's like we charge an hour minimum so is there anything else you want me to look at? Immediately I'm thinking great I'm going to be price gouged...but all my toilets, showers etc work fine and I replaced my water heater and this past summer. I say no not really. So he goes out to his truck to write up the invoice.

Comes back and it is $130!! $35 for the service call (that's fair) and $95 for labor. That's $95 for less than 1 minute of your time (in my home) and labor that consisted of turning a wrench 90 degrees?!!

I'm not saying they shouldn't be paid anything but if you were ever going to cut the charge for your labor this was it. Good grief. IMO $50-60 would have been reasonable. $35 for the call and $15-25 for the "labor".

As a single woman my biggest concern is I will get taken advantage of in pricing when i have to call a repairman and it's experiences like today that make me feel that way. It's a shame too because I honestly probably would have been a customer for life and now I don't even feel like I can recommend them to someone else.

Unbelievable! $95.00 Labor charge to tell us what we already knew. We called them to have a valve replaced. Seriously, THE ONLY THING HE DIS WAS TURN A VALVE UNDER OUR SINK. Could not fix because he couldn't get the water turned off outside, had to call the city. Still charged us a service fee of $35 and a labor charge of $95!!!! For turning a valve, that we already knew was faulty!!!! Husband asked if there would be another charge for them to come back out, after city able to turn off water? Answer, "YES"!!!! How do they sleep at night?
