Company Overview

Sila Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on heating and cooling system upkeep, installing systems in vintage homes, enhancing indoor air conditions, and geothermal systems for those seeking sustainability.

Before Sila came to be, Jack entered the industry with his dad, Steve Rothacker at a company named Unique Indoor Comfort Services. With his father's mentorship, Jack assembled a remarkable team that expanded their operations into Philadelphia, evolving the family business into an exciting regional company. In 2010, Jack restructured that business into an independent entity and renamed it Sila Heating & Air Conditioning.

Despite ongoing growth and remarkable achievements, Sila stays true to its family-oriented foundation, with Jack Rothacker actively contributing his knowledge and guidance as an important voice on Sila's Board of Directors and as a mentor.

Our guiding principle is simple. We aim to deliver the highest quality of service by supporting, empowering, and rewarding outstanding individuals through a focus on constant growth; and by providing excellent results for all our clients.

Launched in 1989 by Jack Rothacker, a third-generation heating and cooling specialist, Sila has evolved from a family business into a leading and respected HVAC company in the northeast, serving clients from Maryland to Massachusetts.

Jack's entry into the field started working with his father, Steve Rothacker at Unique Indoor Comfort Services. In 1989, Jack took the leap to start his own Unique Indoor Comfort in Philadelphia. With his father as a mentor over the years, Rothacker created an exceptional team of executives, managers, engineers, installers, and customer service representatives who, through trust, hard work, and focus, expanded the Philadelphia Unique Indoor Comfort into a thriving regional business.

I called Sila in July. They charged me $500 for a diagnostic with a technician. The a/c worked for a few months. It is now November and there is COLD air blowing through my vents even though it is 32 degrees outside!! I called Sila AGAIN to report the heat is not working. In a SHAMELESS money grab, they wanted me to agree to $330 in upfront charges BEFORE even crossing my threshold!! It is disgusting!! Clearly, the problem was NOT fixed properly the first time and they are going to charge me AGAIN as if they had never been in my home before this system failure. If you want to be ripped off, call Sila!!

Sila is incompetent and dishonest. We got tired of their overcharging and hired a different AC service company this year. The new company discovered that Sila had switched our AC compressor fan without our knowledge - and the air is blowing into the compressor, not out, away from the compressor. What kind of terrible company does this kind of thing? Avoid Sila at all costs.

Hiring Sila to install our central air conditioning came with huge headaches and was nothing but a mistake. The unit installation was shockingly terrible. During the installation process, we came home each day to a dirty home, including dirty handprints on our walls and footprints on the floors all throughout our house. There was also damage, including a large indent left in our wood floor where something was dropped and a ceiling that was left in complete shambles. Lastly, two of the vents didn't work because they weren't hooked up properly in the attic. Fortunately, when we contacted the main office in our area a service manager was horrified enough by the state of our home that he did have Sila cover the cost of a painter coming to repair and repaint our ceiling. He was by far the most competent person we worked with at Sila and we appreciated his responsiveness.

The next issue we had has to do with the close-out of our permit. This took from July 2019 when the project was finalized until January 2021. We followed-up to have our permit closed out more times than we can count. At first, it turned out they had an employee in their permit department who never actually contacted the city despite telling us on several occasions it was being taken care of. Then, once he was fired, the new people reaching out had the wrong email for the building department and rather than picking up the phone and calling directly, they decided to keep sending unanswered emails. We finally had to reach out to Sila's COO and he seemingly directed his staff to figure this out. They FINALLY determined the email they had was incorrect. When they notified us of the wrong email they played it off as we ""all"" had the wrong email. No, sir, you did, not us. It wasn't our responsibility to reach out to the building department at any point and we will not be held responsible in any way for Sila's ineptitude. After the correct email was found the city had the final paperwork to us in a week.

1 star as there is no option to give any less than that.
Worst possible contact you can think of. I called SILA for a small leak problem i had in one of the heating pipes. Spoke to the customer care about the leak specifically asked that i want to drain the water from the pipes so the leak is not a problem and wanted the executive to take a look at possible alternatives to fix the leak issue. Agreed that $149 would cover the visit fees (diagnostic) and the draining work as well. When the executive came he said $149 is only for the visit and diagnosis of the problem and asked more money for the draining of pipes (separate $100). Called the customer care and reached to the same contact that i spoke and agreed to and he literally denied that draining is not included. The executive and the customer care both started talking rudely. Does not matter if it is just a $100 problem but it reflects how they treat their customers. I ended up paying full amount and got the pipes drained. Executive said i ll get back to you with the estimate to fix the issue as he took the picture and was supposed to show it to his manager. Its been a month still no body has contacted me yet. So i ended up paying 250 for draining the pipes and i still dont know how to fix the issue. I wont do business with you ever!!! Period.

If you need an Air Conditioner or Boiler, avoid Sila like the plague.

They installed a replacement AC and Boiler Friday. For $18,500 I got a giant hole in my ceiling because they got lazy about putting down plywood, broken basement steps because they didn't have a proper handtruck, and (most importantly) an AC that doesn't cool after they ""adjusted"" it the morning after.

They refuse to send someone over in the middle of a heatwave to fix the AC, don't know when they will get around to fixing the hole, and won't even call me back.

Thank God my toddler wasn't in my room when the ceiling came down. The big guy on the ladder is the one who came through (he was uninjured).

If you want someone who will install a system, stand by their work, and not cause destruction in your home, go somewhere else!

Technician N. Masone app. On 6/18/2020 Customer # 260284
I am very disappointed with Sila they are very unprofessional. I called them to recharge the R-22 Freon gas to my unit. Technician N. Masone came in on time and saw the unit outside, and in less than 10 minutes, he said that I needed a new unit, and I said that only needed some Freon gas; he replied that they do not recharge an old unit.
Instead of recharging the unit, he gave me 3 quotes to replace the whole system, prices from $13,000 to $20,000.
Then, he came to see the furnace inside and spent another 10 minutes, and charged $125.00 plus $90.00 total $215.00, all for writing a quote.
I called another HVAC company; they recharged the unit, and told me that the unit is working fine, only needed some gas.

Why do they have an emergency contact when they do not call you back? I bought this high velocity system in the late summer last year, it was cool outside so I did not really run it too much. This year it is hot so I noticed some of my rooms are not cooling. I have sick elderly family members here that need the cool air. I called Sila they came out within a day or two. The guy was on time and said that the unit needed a part. Apparently when they put it in they forgot to put this part in. WOW!! I spent a lot of money on this and it was not done right. The worker came out about 3 weeks ago and stated he would order the part. I have emailed the company and called several times. No one seems to know what is going on with the part or when they are coming back to fix the issue at the company. They have told me they would call me back and they haven't each time. This is not how you do business.

Their was a drip that was occurring in my home and I couldn't resolve it. I'm a EMS profession and had to take a day off for this leak on the worst times of the pandemic. I called the company and their technician dan was able to resolve the drip in my home. I will continue to use this company forward.

I wrote a review and it was taken down - claiming I did not use this company . However , I have the invoices and paperwork to prove I did . I had a service contract in which the company would come out and service the unit for the season , reduce price on work needed and coming at a faster pace . Well my horror began they sent Abraham he told me my unit needed a motor because it was not working . I told him okay - even though I felt the heat . He came back two days later and then claimed I needed a whole new unit !!!! I threw him out ! He red tagged my unit ; I called for a second opinion guess what my motor did not freeze the man showed me it moved . The unit I did replace because Abraham cracked a piece trying to remove the motor and door . Mike the service manager no help at all . Get a second opinion or use another company .

Mixed reviews for various reasons.
Had extensive Mitusubishi HVAC system installed over one year ago (the saga has just ended now). Higher-priced than other estimates I had received, but took a chance on it because of Mitsubishi reputation. On the whole, the technicians who have installed and serviced the system have been courteous and knowledgeable. Very satisfied with the quality of the product. Getting there was another story. The installation took much longer than it should have. Everyone (Sila, Con Ed, the electrician referred by the salesman) had their foot in this mess to some degree. Apparently Sila caused a short somehow by crossing a wire. There was some miscommunication between the electrician and ConEd. Finally, when it appeared that the end was in sight, it took days and seemingly endless calls from the technicians to Mitsubishi tech support to rectify some diagnostic issues they couldn't figure out - only to be resolved when finally a technician concluded that there was a misconnected wire. So the system was finally up and running, more than a month later than it should have been. Fortunately, I am retired; otherwise there could have been some serious hardships. To the credit of Sila, when I expressed my misgivings, they offered me some compensation in the form of an extra year of their service agreement.
Now, the saga begins with the visit from the salesman. He impressed as a personable, intelligent young man, and he is a veteran as well. He did make several visits to our home, and although he characterized himself as low-pressure and Sila as a ""consultative"" firm whereas a sale is never made without several visits, it was evident that he was becoming impatient. He did go down somewhat in price from the initial quote (whether or not he could have gone down more is uncertain). Ultimately, when I did agree to the deal, it almost seemed as if he couldn't have been in more of a rush to leave; he didn't immediately offer thanks and I had to extend my hand to shake his. But I'm always willing to give the benefit of the doubt; there is always the possibility of oversight. But the story doesn't end there.
As far as the electrician that was referred by the salesman, he did not work for Sila and was not included in their price. In other words, he was hired independently by me. You may take this is a word of caution as you read this review further. But, not having experience with any local electrician, and assuming that the salesman (and company) had prior experience working together and could vouch for him, I went with the referral. At first, the guy seemed courteous and knowledgeable, and as far as I could tell, reasonably priced. Than I got hit with a surprise. I was told my electrical panel did not have enough room (to install the needed 240-volt line). It would cost me more than twice as much the original quoted price to have the new panel installed. I expressed my concerns to the salesman who referred me; he claimed these contingencies were written in the contract, and Sila bore no responsibility. The first part wasn't true, I suppose I had no argument with the second part. Although not very happy, I was perfectly willing to get past this for the sake of what I considered good will on both ends. Apparently, the salesman didn't think the same; he did not return any subsequent phone calls.
Initially, I had requested that Sila put in for a building permit for the installation. They really dragged their heels on this one; they were supposed to apply for the permit prior to the installation. Almost cost me a penalty, but fortunately, the town waived it. And then I found out that in order to receive the building permit, the electrical work had to be certified. And then, conveneniently, the electrician became MIA! He would not return calls or texts from myself, or the company. The manager put me in contact with an electrician with whom, unlike the first guy, they had prior positive experience. I contacted him, he came to my home and inspected the work the first electrician had done. Upon looking underneath the electrical panel it turned out the first guy had done a completely illegitimate (and illegal) job (""bugged"" the wires, in technical parlance). So to have this situation rectified, I would have to pay the new guy more than I paid the first guy. And then, in mid-stream, I found out that the installation manager had resigned (or, had been terminated), and I had to start over with another manager! He offered to pay half the cost for an electrican of my choice. Better than nothing, I guess. He said he understood my concerns, but, I bore some responsibility, because ultimately, I was free to go with any electrician I chose. Are they willing to stake their reputation on the fact that they would refer me to an unlicensed electrician (even if unwittingly)? Should I have trusted them, or done more careful vetting? Of course, hindsight's 20/20. You decide, folks.
