Company Overview

Kitchen and bathroom renovations, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, wiring and maintenance services.
We have proudly served as a family-run company since 1915.
At 16, I started my journey at my grandfather's company, excavating (""like everyone else who started""), and assisting with plumbing issues as well. The business was run by my father from 1950 to the mid-1970s when we took charge of the company. I have no intention of retiring soon: I love what I do. I enjoy coming in to manage operations. I had a very slow draining bathtub and original 60-year old plumbing. Willie from Shreve McGonegal was great. He was on time. Knowledgable. He walked me through the options step by step during the project. And he got the tough job done. The old plumbing design made it very difficult (maybe impossible) to snake past the trap pipe. Willie predicted it and, unfortunately for him, he was right - the first snake try didn't work. The next step was for him to go under the house into the wet crawl space, cut the trap out, replace it, and then re-try snaking it. He did it all. It was great to watch a professional do a fantastic job under very tough conditions.

Thank you, Willie! And I couldn't more highly recommend Shreve McGonegal after this experience. Oh .... and the drain has never worked better.

POSITIVES:

When we called on a Friday for a main line blockage issue, a plumber was able to come out that day. The plumber who was sent out was very nice.

NEGATIVES:

PRICE -- Be Careful!

Our new (to us) home had a main line blockage issue. (We Googled it-- the plumber confirmed it.) Shreve & Sons wanted $575 to clear the blockage. Our home warranty company stated that the job should not exceed $200. Since we were not willing to be $375 out of pocket, we (thankfully) declined. Unfortunately, we still paid $50 for the 5 minute visit. (Random- They don't/didn't take credit for payment--just cash or check. Stone Age.)

While we were waiting for our home warranty company to send one of their contractors out, we continued to Google solutions. At Home Depot, we spend $20 on a drain bladder. The drain bladder resolved our issue in 5 MINUTES! Thankfully, we only had a soft blockage AND we didn't panic and pay $575 for a $20 fix.

I have used these folks a few times now over the last year, both for HVAC and plumbing. They have been terrific. Easy to schedule, they show up when they say they will and the work has been excellent. We've had the very early am appointments and I've had appointments in a window--no problems on any visits. I had a tricky bath tub faucet and when I finally called for the follow up visit several months later (my delay not theirs) they still had the part from the initial visit ready to go. Highly recommend. Tsegaye is terrific

My Kohler toilet broke on the Friday before Memorial Day. The big box stores didn't carry the part I needed. I went to Shreve/McGonegal and Cody sent me home with the part. I liked the small neighborhood store and personal service.

I got a new floor installed in my bathroom which left the toilet flange about 1/3"" low. Without going into details, there are a couple of ways to address this, including the ""nuclear option"" which consists of chipping out the existing flange and replacing it. I called Shreve to get a tech out and assess whether alternatives might be acceptable.

Tech got here, looked at the flange for a couple minutes, went outside to call someone (I assume for advice), came back in and told me their choice would be to replace it. I said I'd be looking into other options.

I then asked him if he'd be interested in fabricating a drain line for my new sink since he was there. He said his truck had broken down and he didn't have the right parts in the van he was using.

Total time at my place: 15-20 minutes. Told me what I already knew, and wasn't able to do a different quick job due to a broken down vehicle. For this I was charged a $50 dispatch fee. Combine this with the 5-hour appointment window (the longest I've encountered) and I don't see any reason to use these guys again.

About three months ago, in an attempt to buy local we went to S/M to buy just a shower head that connects to the end of the shower hose. $75 later I installed it. It installed OK but the water pattern was poor, not due to our water pressure. We were told at purchase it could not be returned for any reason. Today I was adjusting the water pattern and two parts popped out of the head making it useless. Took it back to S/M and they claimed it was my fault - offered NO recourse. Not so much as a small discount to get a replacement head. Not customer service oriented at all.
Will I ever use S/M for anything...................NEVER!!!!!!!!
BEWARE SHOP AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!!

I would give them zero stars. I made an appointment 2 days ago for a plumber. They said he would be here between 12-5. When he had not arrived - nor had anyone called me by 4:00, I called them. The plumber said he would be here in 30 mins - which I doubted because of the traffic. This place is unorganized and not at all customer friendly.

the Good: The electrician was friendly, knowledgeable and worked at a good pace.

the Bad: The office person who made the appt wrote my number down wrong, so the electrician came an hour later than expected. There is also a $50 dispatch fee and the service person who comes to your door is supposed to give an estimate. The guy never gave an estimate, and I trusted it would be reasonable since they are on Angie's list.

the Ugly: They charge $50 per quarter hour -- that's $200/hour folks!! The lady who tries to make your appt is a complete liar when she says they do not have an hourly rate. Even the manager I spoke with, completely professionally dead.

Overall: It's a shame their front office folks seem like scammers when their technicians are good. Would never call these people again. Ever.

We used Shreve/McGonegal to fix a basement sink that wouldn't drain. Making an appointment was super easy, and even though our problem was by no means an emergency, they gave us an appointment early the next morning-early enough that we didn't even have to take time off from work.

The plumber who came out was knowledgeable, worked quickly, fixed the problem and even improved our pipes by eliminating a sharp curve that lead to sediment collecting. We'd use this company again in a heartbeat.
