We called them to service our swimming pool gas heater -
When the 1st Tech came, I told him our unlicensed pool guy suspected us was a gas pressure problem. He said no - fiddled around and it started to work again. Then he packed up his tools and said even though he didn't do anything to fix it - he had to charge me $385.00 diagnostic fee.
One week later - the heater stopped working again. They sent out another technician- he said he did a few things and it should be good to go. The next week it went on the blink again - I called and spoke with the owner, expressing frustration and feeling I was ripped off for a 45 minute diagnostic fee. I repeated it could be a gas pressure problem - as I mentioned the 1st time. So, he said he would send out a 3rd technician with a pressure gauge. Poof, after 5 minutes, he discovered it was a pressure problem all along!
Which was a Washington Gas Company problem.
Bottom line - everyone at Shipley was nice, but totally clueless and inexperienced.
I will never use them again!!!

Communication with this company is severely lacking. The techs have always been pleasant to work with but, in my most recent experience, when they were unable to fix the initial problem with my HVAC system, I heard nothing back from the main office for weeks after they told me they'd get back to me in a few days (after wanting to charge over $800 simply for the tech visit which did nothing to fix the HVAC issue). This has resulted in not having a working HVAC unit for over a month and a half. When they finally called to schedule an 8am appointment, the techs did not show up.....all day. No phone call or communication with me. I understand if emergencies come up, but poor communication and being overcharged like this has happened too many times with Shipley. Today, they've lost me as a customer.

If you are looking to pay more than necessary, this is the company for you. This month I needed a bathroom in my basement that had been roughed in completed (see photos of rough-ins). Shipley came out and installed a toilet and sink I purchased along with the bathtub fixtures. They charged me $2006 (see photos of finished bathroom and their invoice). Two days later when we experienced problems, they came and said I couldn't use the newly installed bathroom due to the fact that I need a new ejector pump which they would gladly install for $992 -- bringing my bathroom installation (labor only) and ejector pump costs up to $2998 -- ridiculous. Yes, I know I was crazy to initially pay them the $2K -- I just needed the bathroom quick for my Mom who has been sheltering with me during the virus. I also thought they would be a better choice since I had been paying $20 a month for their membership. Needless to say, I am no longer a member or a customer of Shipley Plumbing and Heating. The costs of doing business with them is too high and at my peril.

I'd give them no stars if it was possible. I called on them to fix a long standing problem in my rental property. When I called to make an appointment, they couldn't give me an estimate on the cost of coming over and diagnosing the issue. I told them exactly what needed to be done and the lady on the phone said they could not give me any prices, not even an estimate. She seemed pretty nice and after reading all comments, I figured, let me give them a try since everyone said they were very fairly priced and honest. The technician came and wanted to charge twice of what others had quoted me over the phone. They were there already; my tenants couldn't use water and I was pressured to get it done. I paid reluctantly. The worst part is that, he could not fix the issue but just for bringing the equipment and trying, they ended up charging me the quoted amount. Again I was under a lot of pressure to get something done. Eventually I had to get the main line replaced but did not call them back and will never call them again. I found out later that they had broken the toilet in one of the bathrooms and did not tell me about it, just patched it up and set it back in place, Their prices are ridiculous. I'm thinking most of the people who said they're fairly priced are probably friends or family members. They're the worst business I've ever dealt with. So dishonest!

I was extremely disappointed in the service provided by Shipley. Way overpriced. Two shower valves needed to be replaced. The parts on the Internet cost less than $100. The plumber spent less than an hour. The charge was $700. Outrageous. Find a plumber with an hourly rate.

I have used Shipley's plumbers several times and they are always amazing and fairly priced. I recently had to work with Washington Gas. Rob Shipley, the owner himself, answered my call and left his dinner to help me have my gas line restored. This company hires the best and is not too big to help out in emergencies. Ron Shipley is truly kind, caring and honest. A rare person in this day. This company goes beyond expectations.

I called up Shipley's for a repair on an AC unit which winded up being a pipe leak. The service technician was very polite and was trying his best to resolve the issue. He called Mr. Ron to come to my residence. After talking everything over they tried reaching the exposed pipe. Mr. Shipley stated to me that I had to remove the drywall ceiling in my bathroom so that they could reach the bad pipe. However in the mean time he was going to cap off my the cold water (side note...this left no water to any of my bathrooms; so no toilets and no showers). He gave me a name and number of someone who could do the demo work.

After contemplating if I wanted to go down that road I decided to get a different opinion. I called a second plumbing service to come and take a look at the pipe. He said that he would only need to cut another small hole to expose the line but suggested I use the original company because they knew where the leak was and it would cost too much to reconnect the piping to find the leak.So I recontact Shipleys and Mr. Ron stated to me that he didn't feel that he could get to the pipe without having to expose more of my drywall ceiling. I explained to him what the other plumber had said to me and Ron's statement was ""if he thinks he can do a better job maybe you should go with him; I don't think he is going to do any better than what I can do."" Also, Shipley's wasn't able to come out for another 6 days to fix the issue. I called back plumber two and he came out the next day, cut a small hole, removed the old pipe, replaced with a new line, and our plumbing nightmares were resolved.

I decided to write this review mainly because I was upset on how Shipleys service was handled. They left one big hole and another small hole in my house. They wanted me to spend more money on a demo of a ceiling that was not necessary (it would had been a remodel of my bathroom). He also told me that he may need to remove duct work to get to the piping (plumber 2 did not have to do that). I want homeowners to be aware to get a different opinion before agreeing to their work. When everything was all set and done my repair for plumber two was $780. Shipley's charged me over $400 their first time out and Ron stated it was going to probably cost me $2k to get everything repaired.

Bryan, our ""Plumber,"" just left our house and with the memories fresh in my mind I wanted to jot down my impressions. Our need for a plumber was serious. Yesterday, Christmas night, just before we were about to leave for dinner at a friend's house, my wife went down to the Utility Room in our Basement. As she walked down the stairs an immediate sense of fear hit her. Our Basement was beginning to flood with water. Turns out our Hot Water Heater just broke. For the next several hours, after turning off the main water switch to the house, we did everything possible to clear the water using a Wet/Dry Vac.

With the water under control, our job was now to find a good plumber who would come out first thing in the morning. My wife called her cousin in Baltimore who owns a plumbing business (Bruce Solomon Plumbing). Bruce highly recommended Shipley Plumbing.

His recommendation was spot on. Shipley Plumbing sent Bryan to our home. He arrived on time, was clean cut, very courteous and professional, sympathetic to the problems we faced and highly competent. After examining the Hot Water Heater and several other projects we had for him, and agreeing on costs, he got down to work. He and a colleague by the name of Hector worked their tails off for the next six or seven hours to accomplish the numerous tasks. We had more work done than we initially thought but when you find a reliable tradesman, you have him do what is necessary.

Bryan and Hector methodically went through each and every project. Along the way they kept us informed of what was happening and when water service would be restored to the house. When everything was finished, Bryan walked us through the work which had been done and answered any questions we might have. They also cleaned up the area they worked leaving it cleaner than it was when they started. This is a mark of a dedicated tradesman and a company that really cares about making a good impression and meeting the needs of their customers. These attributes are not what you typically find. Based on this and other instances in which Bryan/Hector and Shipley performed, I gave them Five Stars. I'm a tough cookie and have high standards. Shipley Plumbing met those standards with a smile on. If you need a great plumber (just hopefully not one on a holiday weekend and in an emergency) choose Shipley Plumbing. If you need a good plumber in Baltimore call cousin Bruce Solomon Plumbing. They have the same skilled tradesman and a equally fine commitment to customer service.
