ABOVE AND BEYOND!
TLDR: *OUTSTANDING* service, at a fair price. S.P.S. provided highly competent service, in an unusually difficult emergency setting, and I cannot recommend them highly enough!
The long version...
Jonathan and his wife *are* S.P.S. This is a small family owned business, which was one of several reasons we chose them in the end. It turned out to be a good choice. I love ""Mom and Pop"" businesses like these guys, because they are still hungry and will work really hard to make the best possible outcomes a reality. Jonathan, and his wife (I apologize that I can't remember her name, as she *absolutely* deserves to have named credit as well, but - I lost my notes. She is just as badass as her incredible husband, and they work together as a GREAT team!). These two are competent, capable, out of the box thinkers: they were able to solve our uniquely bizarre problem within our insane time frame, and at a reasonable price.
Because of the Yelp text limits, the ultra short (& likely a bit confusing) version looks like this: we had a house with an on and off wet basement. The problem was that when it was wet, it was three to four FEET of wet! Obviously, a sump pump was the bare minimum needed to start working this issue, BUT... we had a very limited amount of time to resolve everything (I don't have the space to even start an explanation of (why, sorry!): we had a must-pass inspection on Tuesday, and we realized the problem on Friday - 4 days before this do or die inspection was due. We called EVERY company that seemed even remotely capable of doing the work, and S.P.S. was one of only two that were both able and willing to do the work on the terms we required. S.P.S. got the final nod because the other candidate was a bit sketchy, but it turned out to be an *exceptionally* good choice! Jonathan agreed to work on this nightmare on Sunday, believing, as we did, that it just needed a good sump pump.
These two warriors spent their entire Sunday with us - and not their kids - because we needed this work done immediately: they did it without any complaint, and they did it *exceptionally* well, despite running into several CRAZY obstacles (like a home-made ""dam"" someone erected in the past, apparently to try and solve this very issue).
To install a new sump and pump *should* have been a half day project, but the various crazy-town obstacles they ran into made it an all-day affair - and there wasn't even a hint of complaint: true professionals!
Besides the home-made ""dam"" (with rebar no less! WTF?!?!), the slab was considerably thicker than expected, and the ""soil"" under the house turned out to be almost pure Midwest Clay.
I cannot tell you how much respect I have for people who still get down and dirty and just get their work *done*! They looked really rough after this first day of *hard* labor, in high heat and humidity, but there wasn't a single complaint, just a friendly, totally professional demeanor that I don't know if I could have maintained myself. They are just total professionals!
Obviously, Murphy's Law was in play, because we had a big problem and little time, so the next morning when I went to check on the basement, it was still technically wet: not three or four feet of wet, but there were clearly streams of water running all over the floor to the new sump. While the rivers were now being pumped out, I still needed a way to not have any of that water in the first place, and I needed it fixed in the next 24 hours, no matter what: a seemingly impossible task, but one which Jonathan was up to, *without complaint*!
Jonathan came back the next day, after his regularly scheduled projects, to once again try and fix my intractable problem, and he succeeded, because of his unconventional approach. He dug out the mortar and cement around the bottom corners of the entire basement, finding roots throughout. He removed as much of these as possible, then back-filled the entire mess with hydraulic cement. On top of the hydraulic cement, he painted on a heavy water-sealant layer of something, which was an idea he came up with out of the blue. This was not the whole fix though: while tearing out roots, he noticed a tiny little hole in a corner under the stairs, and after talking it over, we gave him the go-ahead to dig out whatever that was, and then seal it. That ""hole"" was the tiny air-valve side of the 3 foot hose pictured below. The upshot is that some crazy person seems to have decided that placing a hose into the wall, and placing the other end of that hose into the ground a few feet from the house, would drain the water. Clearly, this was insane, but there it was anyway! What really happened was that the hose was bringing water IN to the basement! It's worth noting that at least a dozen people, had inspected the entire area, and missed it - until Jonathan! He fixed that, (needing several hours more), and it's now *bone dry*!
HUGE thank you to Jonathan, AND your wife!
