Kevin Comerford and his family have been addressing the heating and air conditioning requirements of Northern California residents since 1972. Kevin completed his studies at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, graduating in 1994. Following his graduation, he joined his family's heating and air conditioning business. His parents sold the business to a $5 billion corporation in Dallas, Texas, after 25 years of ownership. Kevin spent six years with that company before deciding to leave the corporate environment and establish a family-owned, client-focused business like his parents did in 1972. This led to the establishment of Service Champions in 2002. With these core values, Kevin's company has grown to include more than 200 team members and has been in operation for 18 years. Currently, Service Champions provides services to homeowners across the San Francisco Bay Area, including East Bay, South Bay, and Sacramento.

He lives in Pleasanton, California, with his wife and their three kids.

I can not believe the estimate I received today for installation of a new water heater, a stainless steel galvanized stand, and a new water valve they said we needed to replace and they said that little water. The water heater is for my mother, whom I was going to bathe this morning but didn't have hot water. My mom is 91 and just got out of the hospital after being there for about a month. She is also recovering from radiation treatments for her 4th battle with cancer. Thankfully she is doing well but needs a bath. The estimate i received was appalling. With my mom's ""Senior Discount"", ""SC VIP Discount"" and some other duscounts he so gracefully threw in was over 6000 racks... Yup!!! . He thought I was having a senior or something.. I'm crazy but not crazy enough to fall for that quote. The stand they quoted me is the same stainless steel galvanized stand at Home Depot & Lowes for 52.00-100.00, they wanted 889.00 racks!!! WTF! And 50 gallon Water heaters are anywhere between 500.00 to 2000. Maybe their $4000+ WH is also a time machine because i dont think that quote is from this day and age.

Where do I even begin?

Service Champions has absolutely deplorable business practices and I will never recommend them to anyone.

My issue started with my tenants reporting the AC not working and blowing hot air. After some googling common causes and having the tenants try a few troubleshooting steps such as changing the air filter, making sure no objects were obstructing the condenser that didn't work, I decided to find an HVAC company to help.

My home is located in the Bay Area and I googled HVAC repair and saw that Service Champions completely stood out from the crowd with positive reviews. Most times, I take the time to read reviews, google BBB complaints, Reddit complaints but just decided to go off of the overwhelmingly positive reviews they've received. I also usually get 3 quotes from different companies but I needed to get the AC working quickly for my tenants.

I called Service Champions and was greeted by a friendly customer service rep. They were able to arrange a technician to come out the next day. Upon booking the appointment, I was upsold a package for HVAC cleanings which I declined. The upsell should have been the first red flag.

Next morning, the technician comes out and assesses the problem. Calls me, is very friendly and tells me that I have a broken ""dual voltage stabilizer"" that was probably fried due to insects/pests/heat. Him calling this part a ""dual voltage stabilizer"" should have been my 2nd red flag. He quotes me a price to fix the unit at $674 which seemed high. He then stated that I could get a $74 discount if I enrolled in the warranty program. Another upsell, just like when I first contacted Service Champions. Hesitantly, I agreed verbally over the phone. Again, wanting to make sure my tenants got AC quick without fuss as it's summertime and warming up.

After the job was done and the invoice was emailed to me is when things really started to derail. The invoice had a charge of $215 for the warranty, a charge of $450 for the ""dual voltage stabilizer"" and a $74 discount for enrolling in this warranty. The total came to about $600. No mention of hourly labor costs.

I noticed in the picture the technician sent along with the invoice there was a capacitor that was replaced on the unit.

Doing a little googling, I see that HVAC capacitors run around $50. I googled ""dual voltage stabilizer"" and did not find any results. They don't exist. Strange.

Feeling completely taken for, I called Service Champions to have the charges adjusted. The front line customer rep said he couldn't do anything and to call the technician. I said ""No, technicians don't handle billing questions"" and asked to be escalated to a manager. I was greeted by a polite female ""manager"" in which I explained that I was way overcharged and misled on the invoicing. I told her the technician changed out a cheap capacitor and spent around 2 hours on the job, what's the parts and labor cost? She couldn't give me a straight answer. She said they ""weren't a parts company"" and that the parts price includes technicians labor, warranty, etc which is so intentionally vague and misleading. It's common practice to have a competitive price for the part and a competitive hourly labor charge.

After much back and forth, and telling her I'd be disputing the charge on my credit card and notifying the BBB she relented and said she could return $56 on parts/labor and $215 for the warranty program which brought my total to around $329. While still a little high for the type of work done, it was more reasonable and a compromise.

I'm just absolutely astounded that companies can get away with stunts like this.

I strongly urge you to avoid this HVAC company and any companies that can't provide their parts and labor cost upfront without upselling you to death.

Service Champions has been our go-to provider to practically everything our home needs. They have done a phenomenal job of replacing our HVAC, replacing our water heater, facilitating asbestos abatement and providing a full vent replacement under our house, and giving us quotes on needed electrical work. From what I understand, their prices can be on the high end for some services, but the extended warranty, satisfaction guarantee, and extra level of service are worth the investment to us. If anything isn't working perfectly, they send someone out free of charge to get it taken care of quickly. We're so happy with everything they provide and hope they continue expanding their available services.

New AC and Heater still doesnt heat the house. Service Champions solution give them $16,000 more to add a zone. They designed and installed all new ducts and sized the new heater and AC for my house. If it needed a zone it should have been included in their plan. Not an addition for the customer to pay.

Had one of their people come to repair our AC unit. The tech said it needed a capacitor and parts and labor would be $600+. So I looked up the price of the part and found it was $19 and the labor was $600! Ordered the part and installed it myself for $20 and unit works great! Can't imagine how many people are paying those prices! Compete robbery!
