Company Overview

In 1933, a visionary named Samuel Blanc designed an unusual sewer cleaning machine crafted from a Maytag washing machine motor rated at 1/6 HP, roller skate wheels for mobility, and 3/8"" cable to power the blades. It featured a set of specialized blades known as “cutting tools” to cut through roots from trees sewer pipes. Excavation was not needed. In the subsequent year, Sam's wife dubbed this invention “Roto-Rooter.”

Established in 1935, Roto-Rooter stands as the leading company for plumbing and drain cleaning throughout North America. In 1980, the Blanc family transferred ownership of Roto-Rooter to the Cincinnati-based a company called Chemed, which led to the relocation of Roto-Rooter’s headquarters to Cincinnati. Come 1986, the company was separated as a public company, while Chemed held the majority stake. In August of 1996, Roto-Rooter returned to being a wholly owned subsidiary as Chemed bought back all shares that were outstanding.

Roto-Rooter delivers a continually growing variety of services for repair and maintenance to both homeowners and businesses. Our aim is to be the top provider in the field of repair and maintenance. Roto-Rooter functions in over 100 company-owned branches and territories managed by independent contractors and around 500 franchises, catering to roughly 90% of the U.S. populace and certain areas in Canada.
