Samuel Blanc created a distinctive sewer cleaning apparatus in 1933, utilizing a 1/6 HP Maytag motor, roller skate wheels, and 3/8"" cable to power the cutting blades. The device featured a set of unique blades, referred to as ""knives,"" to slice through tree roots in sewer pipes. There was no need for digging. A year later, Sam's wife Lettie named the prototype the ""Roto-Rooter.""

Established in 1935, Roto-Rooter is recognized as the leading provider of plumbing, drain cleaning, and water restoration services in North America. The Blanc family sold Roto-Rooter to Chemed Corporation in 1980, and the headquarters was shifted to Cincinnati. However, Roto-Rooter maintained production of its famous drain cleaning machines, cables, blades, and other parts at its facility in West Des Moines, Iowa.
