In 1933, Samuel Blanc invented a unique sewer cleaning device using a 1/6 HP Maytag washing machine motor, roller skate wheels, and 3/8"" cable to operate the blades. It utilized a combination of specialized cutting tools, called ""knives,"" to remove tree roots from sewer lines. No excavation was necessary. In the next year, Lettie, Sam's spouse, officially named the prototype the ""Roto-Rooter.""

Founded in 1935, Roto-Rooter stands as the largest provider of plumbing, drain cleaning, and water cleanup services across North America. In 1980, the Blanc family sold Roto-Rooter to Chemed Corporation, which then moved the headquarters to Cincinnati. Despite this change, Roto-Rooter continued to produce its renowned drain cleaning machines, cables, blades, and other components at its factory in West Des Moines, Iowa.
