In 1933, Samuel Blanc invented a unique sewer cleaning device using a 1/6 HP Maytag washing machine motor, roller skate wheels, and 3/8"" cable to operate the blades. The device featured a set of unique blades, referred to as ""knives,"" to slice through tree roots in sewer pipes. Digging was not required. In the next year, Lettie, Sam's spouse, officially named the prototype the ""Roto-Rooter.""

Founded in 1935, Roto-Rooter stands as the largest provider of plumbing, drain cleaning, and water cleanup services across North America. In 1980, the Blanc family transferred ownership of Roto-Rooter to Chemed Corporation, and the company relocated its headquarters to Cincinnati. Despite this change, Roto-Rooter continued to produce its renowned drain cleaning machines, cables, blades, and other components at its factory in West Des Moines, Iowa.
