Monica W.Roth's Heating and Cooling team did an amazing job and exceeded my expectations! I see there are some negative reviews, and most seem to be about pricing, but I was happy to pay for the service that I got today. Adam was courteous, professional, and knowledgeable from the minute he arrived to fix my furnace. Every interaction I had with Roth, even the people in the office on the phone seem to take pride in what they do. We have had a lot of good AND bad experiences with other HVAC companies, but I am a Roth customer from now on.
Very through in the servicing of my furnace. Knowledgeable, polite and informative. I appreciated what I felt were very honest answers to my questions repair vs replacement. David was the epitome of what I expect in professional service.
Their workers seem to be be on commission or stand to gain by upselling and if they feel you're in a bind then they will extract every bit
My furnace broke down a week before Christmas on a Saturday night. I panicked about getting someone out to look at it knowing a snowstorm was on the way in 2 days. I made several phone calls and went with Roth because I thought my chances of getting someone to come out as soon as possible would increase if I went with a larger company. To their credit, after a few phone calls they did get a technician out the next day (Sunday).
He came out to my house (cost $114.00) and told me I needed several parts to be replaced. I asked for a quote. About 20 minutes later he gave me a quote for 3 replacement parts - a hot surface igniter, a control board assembly and a blower motor assembly. I asked for the part numbers and was told they couldn't give me that information. Huh? How could they get a quote without part numbers, unless they set their own in-house price...?
Well, after I called Roth to get a quote on a furnace replacement with a breakdown of labor and the cost of the furnace itself, they said they couldn't do it because they only provided flat rates that included parts, labor and overhead. When I told them I thought they were trying to hide their high markup by not making this information available to their customers, I was told they were sorry I felt that way. I responded that I felt that way because of how I was being treated so they couldn't really be all that sorry about how I felt.
As a homeowner/customer, I know that asking for a cost breakdown is needed to do comparative price shopping so you can get a clue of what is a reasonable price. The fact that they ""couldn't"" provide this tells me they are doing some serious price gouging which was confirmed when I looked up the cost of the needed parts online vs the quotes I was given. Their markup is more than double what other smaller reputable contractors are quoting. This is apparently a common ruse to pressure the customer into purchasing a new furnace.
In the meantime, I worked with another contractor and referenced the quote from Roth showing that I needed to replace 3 parts (to the tune of $5200).
He said I only needed to replace 1 of the 3 parts Roth recommended and that the others worked fine. He took it to the next level and showed me why.
When I asked for a price comparison between replacing the part and getting a new furnace, he gave it to me. I asked for his recommendation and he said he thought it would be a good idea to get a new furnace because my furnace is 22 years old and could stop working at any time. He also added that if I only replaced the necessary part, the warranty would only cover that part, not the rest of the furnace.
Based on my extensive research, they offered me a fair price for parts and installation, which is really all I wanted from the get-go.
Because of their policies, I would definitely NOT recommend Roth Heating and Cooling if you want to work with an honorable dealer who offers fair pricing and pricing transparency to potential customers.
Autumn P.I own a duplex in North Portland and my tenants let me know that both units in the duplex were not receiving heat but the blowers were running constantly. Garin came out to assess the issue and was meticulous in his process and communicative and honest about not knowing exactly what the issue was as an exact diagnostic wasn't presenting (which is what a different tech had also told me) When I talked about replacing both furnaces, they were able to send someone out to give me a quote within the hour. Though the pricing wasn't something I was able to afford, the sales guy Dillon was super knowledgable, honest and really knew what he was talking about.
Jim P.All of the other reviews are accurate: diagnostic is just a hard upsell and they ended up charging me $1900 for a $500 toilet. Stay far away!
Called them friday atound noon to schedule a visit they were suposed to call me back havent heard from them
ROTH TAKES ADVANTAGE OF CUSTOMERS AND OVERCHARGES THEM. A repair technician came to my home to help with our non-functioning AC unit. He identified the unit and our furnace was old and needs replacing. All told, he was fine and honest so this review is not about him - it went off the rails when I was contact by their salesperson.
The quote from for a new furnace/ac unit started at $21,000 and then, with some deep discounts he could find and a switch to an 80% furnace he could maybe get it down to $18,000. I asked if there were any rebates or credits from the state/feds - and I was told no.
I got another quote yesterday from a local heating and cooling co. and a major brand HE furnace/4 ton AC unit came in at $14,000 - FOUR THOUSAND CHEAPER THAN ROTH WANTED WITH AN 80% UNIT.
Oh and for some reason this other company has access to an Energy Trust of Oregon rebate (which they file for you) bringing down the price another $1,200 - so my price - installed - will be $12,900 for a complete new HE system.
I FEEL TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF AND WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH ROTH.
David S.Roth Heating & Cooling did a GREAT job taking out my old HVAC system and installing a new system, made in America.
I went to four different companies to quote swapping out my old and busted heat pump and furnace for a new heat pump and furnace system. I performed a side-by-side comparison. Roth was highest in all categories. In my mind, I had written them off.
Through the process of investigating the different bids, I contacted all companies. Two washed out because they never called back. For me and my wife, between the last two, Roth called back and answered all of my questions. They were great. We decided their responsiveness showed excellent customer service and that we wanted that. We went with Roth.
For the other contractors, the installs were 2-3 weeks out. Roth basically asked us when we wanted it installed. Seriously, they installed it today, about 24 hrs after signing the purchase agreement.
I had a delivery truck show up this morning with a pallet of wrapped equipment. About thirty minutes later, Tony and Caleb showed up. They worked through the day. They kept the work environment (our house) very clean. They were respectful and professional. They completed the job in less time than was thought. When Caleb was in the crawl space he noted that two of our vent laterals had become a bit disconnected, so he connected them quickly. He noted that the previous HVAC condensate drain had been left to drain in the crawl space. He removed it, they added a condensate pump and ran the drain outside. They went above and beyond and it truly seemed like that was just business as usual.
We have a pretty old house and are just starting to find things that will be needing upgrade, like plumbing and electrical. Roth does this. I will be calling them for all our work. They seem to really believe in customer service! That is sooo worth it.
What a racket this company is. I called to ask for an estimate for one of the most standard jobs possible: a 50 gallon hot water heater replacement in an easy access location (the garage).
They want to charge over $100 plus a fuel surcharge to go and give an estimate. Mind you, replacing a hot water heater is one of the most basic and easy jobs to estimate. There is the price of the heater, the standard attachments, permit fee, and labor. Any plumber would know a good baseline.
They must hope that by gouging you for an estimate (when most other companies are free) that you'll feel obligated to overpay them. Either way, whether you get the work done or not, they win and you lose; it's a great scheme if for the owner.
As for me, I will stick with more transparent and honest plumbers.
Edit to respond to business manager: I stand by my comments. Your estimate ""trip fee"" is unreasonable and clearly exists in order to pressure the customer into accepting any bid you throw at them. You charge a fuel fee too-lol. I don't even want you to come out. I'd sent a picture but we both know that this isn't about actually determining the nuances of a job (of which there are very few) but rather to push people into overpaying because they have already paid the cost of your doing business, ie giving estimates and paying for your gas.
I encourage customers to shop around and see that this company is actually not ""standard"" on their way of doing business.
Also, just to be crystal clear: yes all homes might vary in their plumbing but changing a 50 gallon hot water heater is one of the most basic things that can be done. It's almost as if there is a National plumbing code or standard--oh wait, there is! That way nobody has to reinvent the wheel each time a water heater is replaced..unless of course you're a shady company that is looking to make things as opaque as possible in the name of price gouging.
