Just got off the phone with Richard. Really nice guy and very honest. I called Richard based on the reviews here and referral. His price was way lower than quoted by others five star rated plumbers.

The only thing, he doesn't serve my area. What a bummer!

Honest. Prompt. Detailed-oriented. Communicative. Thorough. Friendly. These words sum up Richard during his first job on our home. The sump pump in our crawl space was making loud banging noises when the washer was running and we had no idea what was causing the sounds. After paying (and wasting) $95 for a washer repair service and another $45 for another plumbing service (who misdiagnosed the problem and suggested an extremely expensive and unnecessary replacement), we finally found Richard through Yelp and got a truthful diagnosis. Richard came out on his first assessment trip; thoroughly inspected the pipes and pump; clearly explained the situation and recommended a solution. Richard educated us about sump pumps and our piping system--which to uninformed homeowners is extremely valuable. We scheduled a follow up visit and Richard repiped the system in 2-1/2 hours (30 minutes less than what he estimated). He walked us through the work carefully and tested the system. Now we can use the washer peacefully without fear of our house exploding beneath us. On both visits, Richard showed up ready to go a few minutes before our appointment time. His rates were extremely reasonable for the excellent quality of service. Bonus: He even tightened loose door hinges that also bothered us for weeks. Richard's service, professionalism, and, moreover, straight-forward honesty deserve 5 stars and we couldn't recommend any better plumber. His previous 5-star reviews on Yelp seemed too good to be true but we're now believers after this experience.

This is an updated review for Richard. Since our initial meetings, Richard has repaired one of our heating vents and fixed a leaky pipe in our front yard. As usual, he was prompt for our appointments and fixed the issues efficiently and cost-effectively. I continue to recommend him to other people who are looking for a reliable plumber who offers reasonable rates.

My original post (from October 2008) is as below:

I am really glad to have found Richard on Yelp! He changed out a leaking kitchen drain pipe, upgraded the connections in and around our furnace, and replaced our old galvanized plumbing with new copper pipes. In replacing our kitchen drain pipe, he discovered that our drain was not hooked up to the venting chimney. I really appreciated that he gave us different options to remedy the situation, which ranged from short-term (but less $$$) solutions to long-term (and expensive) ones. Richard was also able to address our concerns about not tearing out our downstairs bathroom walls and ceilings to put in the new pipes.

In our meetings, Richard was always professional, courteous and on time. He is extremely responsive via email, and he was one of the two plumbers (out of five that I contacted) to come out and provide a free estimate for the plumbing and heating jobs I needed to have done. His final costs closely matched the offered estimates, and I am happy with the quality of his work. I would highly recommend Richard's services and in fact have already referred him to colleagues and friends in the area.

Richard installed our house's first-ever central heating system - in fact, two of them, so we could have two separate, energy efficient heating zones. He also helped us remodel our bathroom, helping us with the design and doing all the plumbing. On both these projects, he also served as the general contractor for various demolition, carpentry and electrical projects, hiring good subs to help us get the job done quickly and well. Richard has great contacts with lots of other, excellent contractors, which really made our life easier. He also arranged for us to get the perfect clawfoot tub from another client of his who had just ripped it out! Richard is reliable, on time, trustworthy, smart, and a pleasure to work with. We'll be hiring him again when it's time for a new kitchen...

Richard replaced my heater this week. It turned out that the old heater in my 1898 farm house was simply under-sized. Richard researched solutions and e-mailed me a quote along with a link to the new heater unit he recommended. I called him one day, he called right back, came by to take a look, provided a quote in a few days and then agreed to do the job right away.

Richard installed the new heater this past Wednesday and I am much more comfortable in my house. I LOVE my new heater. Richard did a super good job and was very easy to deal with. I already recommended him to my sister for a heater repair job!

After my water heater failed, I decided not only to replace it but also my old, inefficient furnace. I began asking everyone I knew for references, went though Service Magic and of course read all the reviews on YELP.
After receiving and reviewing 5 bids, I hired Richard to replace my water heater and furnace, including all new duct work. I was not disappointed, Richard was great. He was extremely reliable, there was no drama or surprises. I will definitely use Richard again in the Spring to upgrade the pipes to copper and remodel my bathroom.

Richard has a great manner. I didn't end up using him to replace my leaking water heater because our schedules did not allow for the appointment. He was still so helpful and gave me advice on what to shut off until I could get someone out here to replace it.
I will definetly call him again for any plumbing needs.

Richard is the greatest! I signed up for Yelp specifically to give him this review. I am completely remodeling my house, and he just finished the rough in portion of the plumbing. He has been a real pleasure to work with. He responds quickly to calls and emails, he is extremely reliable, courteous, and efficient. He came up with a creative solution to make an ebay shower head code compliant, and was very patient with some internet purchases that were a little slow to arrive. I can't say enough good things about this guy. I have been interviewing so many flakes and no-shows during this remodel process, and Richard is really a breath of fresh air. We sailed through inspections-- oh and did I mention he had the lowest bid!
You should hire Richard!!!!!

Richard was my plumber for a remodel on a fixer I bought. He upgraded all the pipes to copper, and installed a high efficiency forced air furnace including all the ducts, etc in my crawlspace. He also installed all valves and fixtures, put ducts for kitchen and bathroom fan through ceiling and roof, faucets, new dual flush low-flow toilet, sink and shower valve. In short, he did all the plumbing in my house. He was always very quick to respond to calls, reliable, friendly. If he is delayed, he calls, and often is there even before he says he will be. He is flexible, quick, and efficient. When there are bugs, he comes promptly to fix them. I recommend him highly and will use him in the future.

Great communication, really fair price (second lowest out of four bids received), on time, keeps a clean work area, great attitude. I can not recommend Richard with high enough marks. He ran a new gas line from the meter, installed an earthquake safety valve, and ran a new water line to the refrigerator all as part of a kitchen remodel. I will for sure keep him at the top of my list when I get to updating my heater and ductwork. If you've ever had work done at your house, you've most likely experienced the flaky tradesman... Richard is the opposite. I will recommend him to friends without hesitation. Update: A couple of days after the above described work was done, the new range oven was delivered and the gas line needed to be moved a few inches to allow the range to be pushed-in snug against the wall. Richard came back out to the house and made the adjustment without charge - even though this wasn't his fault.
