In 1946, Luke Russell wrote to his brother-in-law Howard Pykles in Fairbault, MN, sharing an opportunity to purchase a paint and appliance business run by his brothers, Earl and Harmon. Having been honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps, Luke was working with his brothers post-war.
He sold everything he owned and left a 25-year career in newspapers to move his wife and son to California and buy the business.
Originally titled ""Russell's Plumbing Hardware Appliance and Paint,"" Howard and Luke formed a partnership in pursuit of their American Dream, lasting until 1967. A year after opening a second location in Spring Valley, Luke became the sole owner of that store while Howard retained the original site at 4611 University Ave.
In 1971, Howard's son Craig joined the business and became the sole owner in 1977 when his father retired. Today, Craig and his son Tobias manage the business.
Born in Fairbault, MN, in February 1946, Craig Pykles moved to San Diego with his family at the age of 7. Craig completed his education at Crawford High School ('64) and San Diego State University ('68), earning a degree in Math and a Minor in Business. He then pursued an MBA from Brigham Young University ('70) and worked in the administrative services division of Arthur Andersen and Co. in West Los Angeles. Two years later, he came back to participate in the family business.
In the 40-plus years since, Craig has served thousands of customers, raised six children, and is a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren. Craig holds his family and community dear and is happy to provide service to both.

Recommended Customer Reviews

Wish I had read the reviews before using this company. I called because they were local. I needed a new water pressure valve and a quote for a water heater. I should have done more homework before they came; I was overcharged for the valve and paid for an hour and a half of service that took 5 minutes. Also after comparing the quote for the water heater and installation to other companies, I am happy that I did go with them. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone.

Interesting that the reviews have such a range. That might be because they appear to use rotating subs that they screen, but there still might be an element of the luck of the draw. They have established regulars, but probably have to phase in new people as workload fluctuates. I was satisfied after my dealings with them. They are right in my neighborhood; literally a short walk from my house. I walked in the door and didn't comparison shop, so can't comment on their cost versus others. It is a small, local, family-owned business with a fairly tightly knit core group. By the time they were done taking apart two bathrooms (including structure & slab) and putting them back together (due to extensive water damage) we all knew each other pretty well. It seemed important to them that I was happy with the work. In my case, I was pleased with the final result. I intend to use the company for other improvements (in phases, of course) on my 50+ yr old house in the future.

Went in for keys, and was thinking about a shower replacement - they did an estimate that day (Damien)! They have a great loan program (1 year same as cash) that made it easy and do-able for me. They were very helpful in the showroom with explaining the different types of material (I chose corastone). The work was immaculate - very clean after each day in the demo and construction phase (Herman).
Helpful hints: be sure to be very specific on the little things like recessed shampoo niches (size, configuation, how many, where), shower door (glass, hinge placement, type of handle or bar).
I'm very happy with the shower - but the door handle was not what I expected. Mr. Pykles immediately offered to replace at cost. It's nice to know that when something is not right, they are there to fix it!

best company i have used in san diego for re-doing bathrooms ...this house went from 1 old bathroom to 1 and 1/2.....each ""worker"" displayed professional, profiicient, and experienced work attitudes......thank you...""do not hesitate......change that old bathroom and use pykles!""

I had my entire home remodeled by Pykles and they did an outstanding job. They were responsive to all my questions and concerns throughout the remodel. If something was not done to my satisfaction, it was fixed almost immediately. The foreman was always on time, stayed the entire day, almost never missed a day (and when he could not be there, I was informed in advance), cleaned up thoroughly each day and was totally trustworthy. The project manager, Damien, was incredible in making sure everything was done to the highest standards. Pykles did an incredible job with the kitchen portion of the remodel - it could easily be in a magazine, that's how beautiful it turned out. The bathrooms are great, as well. My wood floors are awesome and I could not be happier. I feel very fortunate that I found Pykles and I recommend them highly.

OK. I went in. After having no luck at Home Depot and sears parts center. I google'd plumbing in lamesa on my cheezy straight talk phone. I got the directions to this place. I cant believe i never noticed this place before, its right next to little cezars. Anyway, i went in there. It was quiet. There was a guy named Steve at the counter. I told him the issue i had with needing a faucet adapter for my portable dishwasher. I ran him down what i had been through recently at other stores and he showed me the adapters he had. I ended up not finding what i was looking for because apparently the part isn't really made (goofy sized female to female adapter). I DID however buy the quick disconnect from this place at ~$4.40. The price at home depot was A DOLLAR MORE. Home depot cost more? I didn't think that i would see that. If you are calling around town regarding adapters and sink faucet stuff i strongly suggest you give these guys a call.
Their showroom is nice. The parts behind the counter, and for that matter the whole store, looked neatly organized.
I paid with debit/credit. No problem.

Nothing but a nightmare! We hired Pykles to help us with the design and construction of a bathroom in our new house. Their labor costs were a relatively high, but we liked the idea of using a local company who might take a little more pride in their workmanship. Boy were we wrong.
We are months over completion date, Had contractors show up late, or just no-show consistently. Parts ordered wrong. The tub surround was installed three times incorrectly, the sink was installed three times and broken in the process. Just basically very little done right..Graded tub the wrong way so that all water went towards our floor instead of the drain. They then tried to correct it by grinding the slab but didn't cover anything so now all of our stuff is covered in a thick white dust and oh,yeah the vanity was out of level.
Update: upon inspection we have found that almost every aspect of their build needs to be redone to make the bathroom functional and up to code.
Contacted BBB and state contractor license.
The repair estimate from the CSLB was for $2000 less than the whole bathroom remodel. And Pykles ended up having their bond pulled to cover our repair costs.
Mr Pykles, who I had several conversations with, offered only the minimal and cheapest options for fixing the situation. Expecting us to settle on a final product that was nowhere near what we had paid for.
I found this companies attitude and ethics to be reprehensible.
You've been warned

After desperately looking for proper piping coupling and elbows at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Dixieline, went onto Yelp and found Pykles. Small place, but had every size I needed for creating a hose line from the pipes in my garage. Very nice and intelligent worker, patience was key with him too. Overall great experience and now time to do work!

Hired this company to do three plumbing jobs.
1-replace water filter under sink
2-replace guts of toilet tank
3-fix minor leak in sprinkler system
The baffoon who came screwed up all three jobs and then tried to overcharge me by ALOT. I called the company with him standing there and they reduced the charge a little. I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy.
You are warned.

We used Pykles recently when our bathtub/shower faucet assembly went kaput. Since we have an old house, the plumbing needed to be reconfigured. We got two opinions - Pykles and Bill Howe - both said essentially the same thing about what needed to be done. We went with Pykles because they did everything, including replacing the tiles that had to be ripped out -- whereas Bill Howe doesn't re-do the tiling when it has to be taken out.
Craig Pykles, the owner, was very professional and responsive. The price seemed like ""top dollar,"" but the service, professionalism, and workmanship were great.
Pykles is probably not the best choice for minor plumbing problems -- but for anything complicated or that requires ""full service,"" I'd recommend them without hesitation.
