The oil heating sector was pioneered by Petro when M.A. Fessler created the oil burner to utilize the crude oil seeping from the ground in California in 1903. To leverage his invention, Fessler founded the Fess System Company, which later evolved into Petro. Fessler honed his invention over the years, and in 1915, the company moved east, where it installed the first oil burner in Boston. Rapid growth followed, and by 1916, the company was securing its first contracts for fuel oil procurement. In 1917, the company had contracts for over 210,000 gallons! Today, ""Petro Home Services"" delivers a comprehensive selection of home services to its customers. Petro provides energy solutions to business clients across its coverage area: CT, DC, MD, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VA. Based in Stamford, CT, it is the leading residential home heating oil supplier in the United States, catering to more than 200,000 customers.

We had our oil tank moved from the basement to outside of the house. We are very happy with the services received by tech Ken B & Sean Baxley they were both were courteous and knowledgeable of the work done. They were both very patient with this long time project.

not good at all.. waiting on hold for up to 2 hours to talk to someone.. they wanted to charge me 606.00 a month for my budget.. very unhappy canceling my service as soon as someone answers the phone. still waiting an hour later!!!

We have a service contract on our furnace and Petro has done great by us over the years with very few exceptions -- and even then, those issues were resolved very courteously and without much delay. Today they responded immediately to our call with a technician who quickly installed a new part and smiled when he thanked us for our business. Technicians are always polite and friendly, with the occasional Slightly Grumpy One who might just be having a bad day but who really knows his stuff.

Horrific. Ordered a $500 worth of heating oil, and they hung a bill on my door for $2200. They said, no problem, we won't charge any late fees if you want to break that into a couple payments. But of course they did. They said just call the local office if you see any late fees and we'll reverse them. Clearly they are screening my call, and I've left dozens of messages. Eventually I got a zero balance statement from the main 1-800 number and a very rude customer service rep. Then a couple weeks later I started getting bills for the late fees only. UNREAL. Dishonest sales, horrible service. Condescending and rude people in this company. Run don't walk to another supplier.

I dealt with Petro Home Services for many years, until I started checking my invoices. This year:Mar 21, 2022 I received 109.9 gallons of fuel oil at 5.97.9 a gallon, when everywhere else was selling oil for 4.47.9. WOW, that's 1.50 more than everyone else. I raised heck and they credited me a measly $75.00. a real slap in my face and still an overcharge of 78.86.
5-27-22 I paid off my entire account at $837.31 No deliveries since.
6-21-22 Had my AC and oil burner serviced ""they spent between 1 & 2 hours"" was charged $634.00 and the end July 20, 2022, I received a bill for $1268.00. I again was dumbfounded at this $1268 bill. I called to raise heck and spent several hours being jerked around on the phone, then the costumer service employee said it was for the ""Smart Pay"". Which is total BS. I'm 83 years old and have trouble getting around. This outfit needs to change their customer services, because it really ""SUCKS"". I'm in the process of finding another company who isn't ripping us off all this time. I checked around and read other complaints towards these thieves. I am from Newark Delaware and NOT from San Francisco. I don't know where they got this information. I have no receipts to check up on this company before Apr 2022, because I trusted them. I'm sorry I did. Won't happen again. Check your receipts very closely.

I have waited over 5 months to write this review in order to give Petro the opportunity to fix the numerous problems with no luck. I've spent 16,000 dollars on ductless systems that do not work. They do not blow cold nor hot air. In addition the big unit outside is already causing the wood on my property to warp that its attached to. I have been getting the run around for 5 months. Finally when a manager calls me, he says that i am giving an attitude while raising his voice at me. Yes, maybe I am a little irked that nothing works. This has been my second largest purchase of my life besides for my house, and all the equipment are lemons. This experience would not be as bad if the managers in Baltimore did the right thing and taken the steps resolved the issues on the multiple times I've called. I have made over a dozen calls for numerous different problems. I have a new born baby at home in which I bought these units for, and she has not been able to enjoy them since installation 5 months ago! I am deeply hurt and feel cheated by Petro and the management team here in Baltimore. Do the right thing Petro. Thank you.

We ended up getting very low on propane, which is needed to use the kitchen stove and fireplace to heat the house.
I called EIGHT TIMES over the last FIVE DAYS to try and get them to come refill our propane, to no avail. They said they'd come out and never showed. They said they'd call me back multiple times and then either didn't, or when they did they had phone problems and just gave up.
Don't waste your time and don't waste your money, or you could end up stuck without the ability to heat or cook in the winter, and they won't bat an eye.

This company delivered fuel oil to an abandoned home that was scheduled to be torn down. I purchased this home in April 2021 and the permits were finally approved. The previous homeowner had an account with Petro and they came and filled up the tank that I had previously pumped out so that the home could be knocked down. There was a sign in the front yard about the new construction, the electricity was disconnected and it was obvious the home was completely empty. The driver should have called the office before filling the tank. When I discovered what they had done, I called and asked that they please come pump out the tank. They informed me it was not their problem and I needed to get in touch with the previous owner who they also told me has not paid his bills. After several phone calls and supervisors, I ended up paying again another company to pump out the tank. There could have been a massive 200 gallon fuel oil spill if I had not taken action. These people don't care about their customers or the environment!

DON'T HIRE PETRO and I use to work for them in the DC area! That's not their real name either, just their trade name. Their corporate name in the DC area is A P Woodson Company, Inc. which was a oil company which Star Group brought and they STINK!, in my opinion. In your area, the corporation's name is another name too- a company Star Group brought!

I use to be an equipment salesman for Petro and they hire subcontractors to install products they sell to their customers and other homeowners. What a joke that was! I simply shook my head in total disgust! In my opinion, Petro had no idea how to run an HVAC business! I also could never speak with Petro's master HVAC and plumbing license holder. I am betting they didn't have one? How Petro has an HVAC and plumbing license is a big question of mine which I am investigating with the DC, MD and VA government. You should do the same in your area. Mark Longer, Petro's long time Baltimore's salesman told me that ""there is no master HVAC license holder here"" which was shocking!

Petro has built their equipment business by using various subcontractors! Petro is just the middle man making money on you! You should be dealing with a real HVAC company that has their own installers, not a company who hires any subcontractor that applies.

Just because Petro sells you heating oil doesn't mean Petro can sell you a furnace or an AC! I suggest you deal with a real HVAC company that employs their own installers! Personally, I wouldn't hire Petro to install a furnace or an AC in my dog's dog house! and I certainly wouldn't hire Petro to sell me heating oil either.

Beware, Star Group is trying to monopolize the heating oil business by buying oil companies from Virginia to Maine. You should complain to the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, DC as well as your Governor, Congressman and US Senator!

Only a fool would do business with Petro but that's just my opinion. Always get three estimates as the Better Business Bureau recommends. You will be glad you did and please, only deal with a real HVAC company that doesn't hire subcontractors! Deal with the owner of a real HVAC company, not the middle man from Petro!

Tell your friends and neighbors to BEWARE of Petro!

Potential salesmen beware! You will never make $110,000 to $140,000.00 a year working the DC area territory! AND Petro cheated me out of my earned sales commission and I am suing them in court! Don't get suckered. Petro stinks and are so hard up that they are now offering $1,000.00 sign on bonus! Don't get suckered by Petro like I did!!!!

Former DC Petro salesman,
Virginia Class A contractor and former Fairfax Virginia Police Detective.
