During the 1930s, Howard Petersen worked as a plumber's apprentice and raced cars on the side. It was a time when racing featured open cockpits and plumbing relied on lead pipes. After his time as a pipe fitter in World War Two, Howard went back to work for a number of small plumbing companies.
In 1947, Howard and his brother George decided to start their own venture. They bought out Bill Mack and established a small operation on West 3rd Street in Davenport. Back in 1947, their company vehicle was an old 1934 Dodge panel truck.
Petersen Plumbing & Heating currently owns 50 separate vehicles for company use. This figure does not include seven backhoes and various other tools. Today, that small two-person operation has grown to employ nearly 100 individuals at various times throughout the year, depending on the projects.
Paul Petersen hails from Davenport and was raised on the fringes of the Quad Cities in Maysville. He graduated from North Scott Senior High School and completed a five-year apprenticeship with Plumbers & Pipefitters Local #25 of Rock Island. After more than ten years in plumbing, Paul transitioned to larger roles in commercial estimation and project management. Currently, he serves as the President of the third-generation family business.
Paul and his wife, Abby, are proud parents of three daughters: Ryann, Alexx, and Erynn. When he’s not spending time with his family, Paul enjoys collecting and restoring classic cars, snowmobiling, and engaging in various home improvement and construction projects.

Not good is an understatement. Had a toilet installed and the toilet immediately broke. The tech used their own hardware to attach the toilet to the floor (Bolts, nuts) which is coincidentally where the toilet broke. It was like trying to get a child to take accountability for the damage in that they shut down and sat on the phone in an awkward silence. Carter did tell me that because I didn't purchase the toilet from them, that they aren't responsible for the damage caused by their actions even though they added hardware which manipulated what should have been done during install.
I would like to thank the Petersen damage control specialist, Carter, for his smug attitude and condescending customer service skills. Carter did not inquire AT ALL about my well being though I was injured by the company's poor quality work. I also appreciate the quick follow up of 3 days after the initial phone call to report the damage. At the end of the call, after Carter had basically told me to go f*** myself and stopped speaking, I told him I don't think I should have to pay for them to come over, break my toilet, cause an injury, tear up my floor around my toilet. Carter said he would send a check for a refund since I paid for services on the spot. At the end of the day, no accountability but I'm glad that I am able to contact the BBB and post comments about this incident. Technology is great and people should know who they are hiring to come into their home to damage their property. I will take responsibility for not reading the recent reviews or looking into their BBB rating.
Renee F.We love Petersen Plumbing. They have helped us from all the small stuff to replacing our furnace. We call them for everything!
Carter was very helpful resolving my concerns. He was interested in my concerns and I appreciate the conversation we had.
Nick an Aydin worked today on flushing the tile drains. Excellent and professional service. Fair value for the service rendered.
Furnace died. Petersen responded quickly. Installation went smoothly and only took half a day. Very professional and friendly installer. Cleaned up afterwards. Not the first time I've had to use Petersen. They are all I use.
I had a fairly large residential job (~4k$) that Petersen worked on. They made several mistakes including not installing two upgrades to the new water heater that were requested, and paid for. The worse problem was they installed an underground gas line that leaked (was not sealed correctly). They charge me $400+ to do a temporary repair of the ground water that leaked in. The repair of this line was made difficult because it was under a stone patio. I offered to pay for the removal of a section of the patio if they would fix the gas line that they installed incorrectly. Never heard back after several calls. They do shabby work and don't stand by their work.
Called for an estimate and they scheduled a Friday morning 8:00am appointment. No sight of them at 10:00am, so I called again. Was told they had truck problems and would set up an estimate for the afternoon. Notta. Spent my entire day off work at home to receive them. Never heard from them...and over a month has passed. Unbelievably bad business.
Dawn C.I know my parents loved their work, but it didn't go so well for me. I had them give me a quote (it was great) back in October, because I needed them in early March. We all agreed on the quote and we even edited it to add more things. Then I left message after message with their office, but no one EVER contacted me with a date for the work. My parents called them WAY after I did and their work is done, so I have to assume they just didn't want the work. THEN WHY NOT JUST SAY THAT???? Now that I'm past the date I needed the work done, I will have to find someone else to do a few other odds and ends. I guess it is all good, because if they HAD come out, my home repair bill would have been nearly $19,000, but now I'll only be spending about $10,000.
Apparently replacing the valve in the shower costs $292! Even with all the hardware removed already. They don't carry the right tools to do the job so they can charge you $200 labor and the cost of tools to do their shopping in your dime!
If a ""0"" was possible for a score..that's what they'd get. We called for a leaky pipe and the drain was clogged. First guy replaced the old section of pipe..took 2 minutes..125.00 dollars for that. Pipe was still leaking after he left. But here's the rip off..he can't unclog the pipe. They consider that 2 service calls because its 2 different problems. Another 110 dollars from my elderly mother. And now the pipe isn't leaking. That's over 236.00 dollars to replace a section of pipe and unclog a drain. I would certInly think a ""reputable"" company could do both in one visit. We will NEVER use them again. And, my next call is to BBB in IA and IL. Detest companies that take advantage of people like this especially when it's MY 80 year old mother. Shameful.
