One Man and A Hammer was founded as a modest, family-operated business focused on assisting homeowners in need of a contractor for small-scale remodels. Our team has now grown to six professional craftsmen and an office manager to manage the increased workload and high customer demand. We continue to deliver the same high-quality work, a principle rooted in Bob Gallese, our President, from his early years.
In his youth, Bob spent time with his grandfather, a Master Carpenter during his summer vacations. He found joy in working with tools and creating things. From the age of 13 until he graduated high school, Bob's summers were dedicated to learning a trade.
Drawing from his extensive experience in the remodeling industry with a national firm, he created a company that addresses the frequently ignored small job market. Luckily, these minor tasks have often transformed into bigger projects, fueling our expansion.

Jo-Anne K.Had a master bedroom and master bath remodeled. Best thing we did in calling this company. Our house was built in 1935 and they came in, sugested a layout and did everything they promished. Mark, the designer, reviewed want I made sugesstions which helped immensely.
The work was completed in 5 weeks as promised. Adam, Frank and Brian did amazing work. The crew was professional and thorough. They put down floor coverings to keep things clean and vacuumed every day before they left. They were very unobtrusive. They offered suggestions which enhanced the layout. Woul call them again definitely.
Craig M.Second time using them and this time was even better than the first! I needed a doorway header raised and railings put in at top of steps. The owner was very responsive and worked with me on the estimate. The crew was professional and thorough. They put down floor coverings to keep things clean. They also did a great job cleaning up when they were done.
My kitchen project turned out extremely well. Once ordered material was received - work began and was completed in a timely manner. All issues were handled. All personnel that worked on my project were friendly and answered all my questions as work progressed. They also cleaned up daily and of course at the end of my project. Great job, everyone.
Our experience with One Man and a Hammer was nothing but professional. The project was a complete (gut) kitchen that included electric, plumbing, drywall, appliance installation, tile and flooring. All of the workmanship was of the highest quality to the point that I sent handwritten thank you notes with cash in them to the two members of the team that performed almost all the work. I could not recommend this firm more highly.
Kevin S.Had them come out for what they claim is a free estimate for kitchen work. They came out and took measurements then said I would have to come to them to get the estimate. The office called to set up an appointment and told me I would get an email confirmation and address of where to go; never received any email confirmation. I had something come up that day, so 2 days prior I emailed and explained that day was not good. I said I would be free two other days and suggested they let me know what time would work. I never heard anything from them. Three weeks later the owner called me regarding setting up an appointing, stating they made several attempts to set up an appointment, but I did not call them back; none of which happened. I told him I was busy this week, but will call him to set something up the following week, once I know my schedule. A few hours later I received a very rude and unprofessional email explaining how much time they put into preparing an estimate for me and although it technically was free, if I wasn't going to use them I should have let them know. It also stated that they attempted to set up an appointment with me numerous times, but I ignored them.
None of this was true. We had an appointment that needed to be rescheduled. They failed to send a confirmation email as they stated and failed to return my emails attempting to set up an appointment. No one ever contacted me regarding setting up an appointment, other then the original time.
If this is how they treat potential customers when they are trying to earn their business, I can only imagine how they treat you once they have your money.
Called this morning for an estimate on a second floor balcony railing.
The first question from dispatch was how big is the job?
She then proceeded to tell me that driving from mentor to Lakewood (which I do every day for my own job) was really far away and that if the job wasn't big enough, it wouldn't be worth their time.
While obviously I realize that is a concern for all businesses, I found it incredibly tacky that the first question out of her mouth was about the potential money they are going to make.
Its a huge red flag when a contractor talks about money before they talk about the job.
And btw, my preliminary estimation for this job, including demo, getting up to code, materials and labor was around 3,000.
Looks like they missed out on this incredibly small job.
Description Of Work:
Attempted to power wash our deck, attempted to put together our dresser and crib, changed faucet cartridge, etc.
WOMEN TAKE NOTE: THE OWNER STALKED ME OUTSIDE OF MY HOME AND WAITED FOR ME. (SEE PART OF HIS EMAIL BELOW ADMITTING TO THIS) I FEAR FOR MY SAFETY.
I had hired One Man and a Hammer to help out with a few jobs around the house given that I am almost 8 months pregnant and have a high risk pregnancy. As part of this process, the technician put together my soon to be baby's dresser. While putting together this piece of furniture, the technician damaged the drawer. The owner came over to inspect it and took full responsibility. We agreed because I had a doctor's appointment that I was late for, that they would replace the furniture with a new one which would have to be ordered (bringing it back fully assembled) and take back the other piece of furniture upon delivery. Then I would pay them for the remainder of the bill. I was never shown a bill for the current work that was completed.
I did not hear back from the owner after two weeks and proceeded to call. I spoke to a woman who gave me a different resolution that we had not agreed upon and said the owner was ""unavailable"". The owner would not call me back so I had to call again. When I explained to him the situation, he ""decided"" a new resolution for the situation without telling me and left me with a damaged item which is still not assembled (I'll have to pay to have someone dissemble the old furniture and reassemble a new one) it and more importantly, the item is still damaged. He said that I would come out on top because the bill (which I still have not seen) was $427 and the dresser only cost $399. However, I am left still with a half assembled dresser and more importantly, a damaged one, which with the damage is far less than $399. I told him that I was perfectly happy with our original resolution that we BOTH agreed upon, but was not happy that he was not honest with me about creating a new resolution.

To compound the problem, you rushed Dennis and I out of the house when we asked if we could repack the old unit. Then when I asked if we could take the old unit with us you said you were ALREADY late for a doctor's appointment. You said that you were having a ""high risk pregnancy and your health comes first"" which I heard loud and clear. The last thing I would want is to hold you up and risk ANY child's life! I, of course, believed you and left within minutes. What didn't make any sense was that because the babysitter was there. We had worked in your house before, including the most recent work, with only the supervision of the babysitter, if even for a brief period of time. Did we all of the sudden scare her? You did tell me that except for the dresser, you loved what Dennis had done. It was never mentioned that he scared you or the babysitter, or that you wanted him out of your home.
Due to a nearby appointment I had soon after I left your home, I sat in my car for 40 minutes just outside your home. What was interesting is that you didn't leave in the forty minutes I was there. This was minutes after telling me you HAD to leave for a doctor's appointment due to the high-risk pregnancy. I don't quite comprehend the reason to fib to us or rush us out of the home. Repacking the unit would have taken twenty, or fewer, minutes, less than the time I sat in the street awaiting my next appointment. I was so shocked that you had not left in that 40-minute time frame that I took pictures and a video of your car remaining in the garage.
