What's the first thing someone tells you when they hear you say you're going to be working with a contractor? ""Be prepared for it to take twice as long and cost twice as much."" Yikes! Needless to say we weren't thrilled or excited when the time came to put an addition on the back of our house.
We were given the referral to O'Gilvy Construction through our architect. At the first meeting our nerves about the project were put to rest. Sean O'Gilvy came out to give us an estimate on what we wanted done. We were very pleased with how he listened to our requests and made suggestions to things we didn't realize we needed, or didn't need. We had a very specific budget and time frame and Sean made sure he and his crew were committed to our plan.
Every phone call was promptly returned, every email was replied to and every question was answered. The professionalism of Sean and his crew was second to none. We were also very pleased with the men he had working on his team. Every one of them were professional and always left the jobsite clean. If we had to do it all over again, we'd go with O'Gilvy in a heartbeat. Dare we say the experience was a pleasure! In the future if we have any additional work that needs to be done we will be contacting them. We will also (and have also) referred them to all our friends and neighbors.
Having a job completed on time and on budget is so rare these days. Thank you O'Gilvy Construction!

I found O'gilvy Construction doing work on my neighbors house and asked the owner Sean for an estimate to install a manual transfer switch at my residence. He quoted me a fair price and started as promised. At the end of the day I found he was reasonable, flexible, under promised and over delivered. I would definitely use him again. He is not like many of the nightmare companies I have seeing in the past that take your money, show up from time to time and drag out the work. He is on time and did quality work. What more could I ask for.
Thanks Sean!

We used Ogilvy Construction to remodel our downstairs. The project included taking down two walls to more than double the size of our kitchen and create a great room. They pretty much handled the whole thing: structural work, flooring, electrical, plumbing, etc.
Sean was honest and up-front through the process and very fair with his pricing (I got quotes from 4 other contractors). I appreciated how he broke out the quote by each part of the project so we knew how much it would cost and there were no surprises. During the project, we would pay him weekly according to what was completed up to that point. Our finished project looks like it cost much more than we paid!
The project was finished in 6 weeks, which was faster than we were originally told and we passed our inspections easily. During the major inspection for the structural and wiring, the inspector told us he was impressed with quality of the work, which made us happy! A lot of contractors may try to save you money by suggested you do the project without permits, but I really felt it was important to have a third party checking out the work because it gave us peace of mind,.
As with most contractors, you need to really be on top of communicating about the particulars about how you want things done. For the most part, they kept track during the process, but we saved a lot of time potentially reworking things by being involved day-to-day.
Also, toward the end, once we started having finished items installed, I felt like they could have been more careful while working around our brand-new things, however they made things right when I pointed out issues.
All this being said, I am thrilled with how everything turned out and I would use Sean again for future projects because I trusted having him in my home, he was respectful and open to feedback, and, particularly on the big things (like structural and electrical, etc.) he did things right and by the book.

We went to arbitration on my post 12/13/2014. The Process of arbitration is design to protect bad contractor such as Ogilvy Construction. Maximin amount allowed to recover is 50k no matter how large the damages are. It does not matter it ended up costing you 100k or 1 million dollars.
We did win an award, we had both reports from bonding company and State of California on our side outlining the defective substandard work. I have all reports in my possession. If contractor pays award, he gets a SLAP on the risk basically. Do your HOMEWORK and call CSLB to inquire about the company and if they were reported, what was the outcome. Ask to see the reports. Actual reports from three separate experts do not lie! Don't make same mistake that I did. It costed me 95k to redo, almost another year displaced from my home.
