O'Brien Service
Company Overview
O'Brien Service Company operates as a locally owned and managed entity. Since our establishment in 1981, we have aimed to offer comprehensive heating and air solutions in Wilmington, NC.
Established in 1981, O'Brien Service Company is a locally owned and operated business focused on providing a complete range of heating and air services, from installations to ongoing maintenance.
In 1961, Jimmy Williams was born in Wilmington and later graduated from New Hanover County schools, finishing the Machine Trades program at Cape Fear Technical Institute in 1984. He applied for a role at the City of Wilmington Fire Department and was hired in July 1984.
Williams has attended The Church of God of Prophecy on College Road since he was a young boy. When the pastor sought volunteers for an HVAC course at Cape Fear Technical Institute to maintain the six units at the church, Williams stepped up. He completed the program and graduated from Cape Fear in 1986.
To build his skills, Jimmy offered his services on a volunteer basis to Donald O'Brien. With a reputation for exceptional HVAC knowledge, O'Brien was someone Williams wanted to learn from. Eventually, he would acquire the company from O'Brien.

I had O'Brien over 2 years ago to look at my unit, I figured it was low on Freon. I was correct, but the serviceman was very pushy about getting me to purchase a plan where they would service me annually. It was expensive, so I passed.
I usually am skeptical of htg/air conditioning sales people anyway, because of the horror stories I've read about them charging for repairs not needed, creating problems etc.
This morning I called O'Brien as my unit needs Freon again and my house is not cooling. Well I was told that because I am did not purchase their plan 2 years ago, I would have to wait until their ""preferred customers"" were taken care of and they could come out on Thursday.
So I will be calling another company for my air conditioning needs today and in the future. Is my money not as green as their ""preferred customers""? I find it strange with all of their techs, they could not find someone to come out before Thursday. Oh well, another example of poor customer service.
Jessica W.A guy named ""Will"" came out to our house for a service call and he did an AMAZING job!!! He seemed like he loved his job and took his time. He was VERY HONEST as well. We will always use O'Brien's from this experience.
Sincerely, Romania & Roxanne
I feel very satisfied with O'Brien Service Company's level of service and professionalism. My crawlspace was flooded during hurricane Florence, all my ductwork was wet and some pieces full of water. They responded fairly quickly and were able to give me a reasonable quote to replace all the ductwork in a very tight environment, unlike some other heating and air service people in the area who were obviously trying to gouge me. I had to wait quite a few weeks to get the work done, but that is understandable in this situation. Meanwhile they provided me with a new dehumidifier to start drying out the area. Once the team arrived on schedule to do the work, although it was a cold and wet day, they persevered and worked extremely hard to demolish my old system ductwork and put in all new ductwork despite the cramped quarters. They were very courteous and diligent, and completed the work in four days, which was amazing.
After installation, they provided me with all the paperwork and warranties and explained operations and maintenance. I don't think I could've gotten better service with any other company.
Just had our HVAC maintenance inspection and we remain impressed with the competence and professionalism of the technicians. Larry performed a thorough and efficient inspection of our 13 year old unit. We highly recommend this company.
purchased hvac system in October 2013. System had 10 year warranty. In August of this year the ac quit working, I called service who sent out a tech who diagnosed the problem, and that it was a waraenty issue.I paid the $90 service charge. He came back the following day and worked 5 or 6 hours and fixed the system. All was well until November 3 when I received an invoice for $890 and a statement with a finance charge too. After several calls I finally spoke to Duane, the service manager. He explained that this was a labor charge which would be $138. per hour. Be careful with this outfit.
Patricia Y.You be the judge.. I have found they do not stand behind what they do EVER!! Had a bad experience the first time by my son's air conditioner went out. I had 2 granddaughters living there, so I wanted to help. I contacted Home Depot, who scheduled O'Brien's. My son is in the Navy so he was only here the remainder of that year. The house was sitting vacant, so I left the units on to keep it neutral temperature, and had Home Depot's semi-annual checkup on the units annually. Last year on August 2, the company Home Depot called was ARS, I think it was the same for a couple of years.. They come out check the units, fill the gas if needed, and replace all the air filters. They do this twice a year, but I change my filters quarterly, so I change once between visits as well. So, in August, they find that the fan is making noise. We called O'Brien's together, and the secretary looked it up and told the service man it was covered. He told me since O'Brien's installed it, he would let them repair it, that way he would charge me 0 for his service call. I appreciated it, and O'Brien's said they would send someone out. Their technician told me the same thing, the fan needed replaced, and they told me it was covered. I said, OK then, go ahead and fix it. A month later they sent me a bill for 690.00. I called and asked what was with that, and they told me that it was not covered because I didn't have a maintenance plan on it or something. I told them A-they didn't ask me about that, and B-I did have someone check the unit twice a year. They told me I had to show proof for each year since they installed it. I called Home Depot, and they told me they don't have those kind of records there. I asked them if they knew who did the servicing at least each year, and they said not really. I called ARS to send me the the August receipt, but it said nothing was done because it wasn't, they let me call O'Brien's to handle it. They did send my son a receipt for the previous years services, so they were that year. Unfortunately, my son was deployed for 6 months on the USS BUSH. They told me I needed to get them the receipts by the end of the month or pay the 690.00. Well, I could not even speak to my son within that time, and they told me it was covered before I told them to fix it. Who does that? Really support your troops too. Blah..
V B.This company has the BEST customer service. I called this morning before they opened, left a message and got a call back in MINUTES! They got a tech out to my house in a couple of hours and this fella is out there working on my A/C in the pouring rain. My house is already cooling down!!! I Whole-heartedly recommend them!!! I have to purchase a new system soon and will be working with them.
Our downstairs (Main) HVAC went out in the 99degree temps. Ouch! The unit was original to the house and about 17 years old. We interviewed and priced a few of the local HVAC companies and decided upon O'Brien. Took about a week to get scheduled, but Richard and Will braved the heat and installed a new 3 ton, 18 SEER Trane in about 4 hours. Cost about $8800. Expensive - yes. Worth it - yes.
These people are as good as it gets . They explained everything that was going on with my unit. Got me up and running first thing in the morning . I am so glad I read the reviews online before I picked a company to use. I will keep a contract with this company forever. They kept in contact with me the whole time and didn't charge a arm and leg to get me going again .now I found out the sell filter and deliver them too. So great.
Andrew B.As a customer service manager myself, I can say that all the staff that my wife and I came into contact with at O'Brien's was above and beyond our expectations. We called around to get quotes from other Heating & Air companies in the area, but no luck on even getting a call back. When we did decide to call and set-up an appointment for a sales call it was on Memorial Day weekend, I didn't expect a call back but with-in an hour or two Mike R called me back. This blew my mind since it was a holiday weekend. After the long weekend Mike R came out on Tuesday for us to select a unit and pick a install date. Some how the cards fell in our favor and O'Brien's was able to come out that Friday. Michael arrived with his install team sharply at 8:30 to start replacing our old unit. Michael and his team did an awesome job on the install and I know they had several obstacles to over come with this being an old house with old wiring and a crawl space that is indoors. I know in the future I will need heating & air work done and will definitely be calling O'Brien's.
