Mr. Rooter Review
Have to share my experience with Mr. Rooter; it is worth mentioning.
Basically in a nut shell, get 2 other estimates before signing anything or writing any checks.
The other estimates should be from a technician who demonstrates experience and root cause problem solving skills.
It went a little like this...
1. Mom and wife at home and drain starts overflowing in the basement. they can't get it to stop, so they call a company with a $99 special and can come out right away.
2. They snake the basement drain, it doesn't clear the line.
3. ""Have to take the toilet off"", now another 350 or what ever.
4. Took off the basement toilet and snakes it and ""hit a blockage""
5. Then cammed it and couldn't really tell what they were seeing, me either as I was watching they whole time.
6. They located the camera end, it was right out side the foundation wall.
and then recommending digging, another 6000 or so.
7. Very hesitantly agreed and signed contract, was made to feel like I HAD to ge this done ASAP.
8. they dug hole right away and left it covered with plywood until the next day.
9. we met and they cammed the open line in the bottom of the pit and found ""another blockage"" under the concrete up to my front door, ""and we are going to need to dig there now to replace the Orange-burg pipe that was probably fragged from age like all the other ones they've seen in the area.
10. they wanted $17000 to replace the line all the way to the eastern street at this point.
11. I got a really funny spidy sense and cancelled the down payment check, as well as sending in a cancellation letter per the contract. it was the last day to do so., we met again the next day and told them about the cancelled check, at which point they pressured me with putting a lein on my home. So i agreed to give them a check for $2000 for work already done... Way too much , but it was worth every penny to get them out of my world.
12. I then had another company come out for a quote, and quoted me about 7000 to replace all the line, but in the opposite direction, ""because they all run to the alley in this neighborhood.
*13. Had another company come out who ""dug in a little"" and decided to try and snake down the line in the bottom of the pit after camming it. they had a better camera, and it was pretty obvious that the block under the front walk was roots, and no damage to pipe at all.... looked great.
14. they broke trough the roots easily, and went another 90 feet out to the street. all done!
15. Hind site on this is that there was a ""T"" where it came out of the house. on way went 110 feet to the street, and the other went to an old clean out or grease trap line that was all blocked up. So when company 1 (M.r Rooter) was snaking and cam/locating, they were either hitting the ""T"" and or going to the north, thus thinking it was blocked.
16. Which leads me to the fact the the hole and all this could have been avoided if a little more problem solving were used. no hole needed, just the snake and camera to go to the south instead.... which I hear is generally done by having the snake rotating clockwise.... as well as a very high quality camera with a clear view of what's happening.
In the end, Company C (Roto Rooter) did a great thorough job and only charged 750 to put in a clean out and fill the hole back in...
SO , Don't let them tell you that you HAVE to hurry and do anything! Don't sign anything unless you've had 2 other companies come out and take an extensive look.
Wendy H.Avoid Mr. Rooter!! Their plumbing tech left crap, (literally crap), strewn across my bathroom walls, floor, toilet, sink & faucet, after snaking my interior main line. I reached out to them in an effort to let them correct things (twice by phone & twice by email) and have gotten no response. There are plenty of choices out there for plumbers, so don't use these guys. Unacceptable!!
This is a dishonest and commission based company.
The family we are purchasing a home from had a plumber come out to clean the sewer and inspect a leak found on the inspection with an infrared scanner.
This plumber did not clean the sewer (couldn't find clean out), and said that there was not a leak.
We had another plumber come out and lone behold, there IS a leak.
Jesse P.This is the worst experience I have ever had with a plumber. I called them in for a simple drain cleaning, only because my regular plumber was too busy. First off, they snaked the wrong line. They failed to realize the line that was having issues was separate from the line they snaked. Ok, so there just incompetent. Actually there beyond incompetent, they're crooks. After snaking the wrong drain, they tell me ""something doesn't feel right"" and offer complimentary camera inspection. Upon this inspection they inform me the entire main line needs to be replaced and estimate it is a 10K job. The plumber tells me that they need to get started immediately or I won't have any working plumbing. He urges me to take action right this minute so they can get the permits for the work. Again the no working plumbing is due to them snaking the wrong line. I almost wonder if they did that on purpose. I said no way and scheduled with my regular plumber. He snaked the correct line and told me everything was fine. It saved me from being scammed out of 10 grand. Although I lost $300 to Mr. Rooter to clean the wrong line (which is way overpriced for a drain cleaning). These guys are basically criminals. I have no idea how they are in business, I guess their scam works on enough trusting folks. Call literally anyone besides these guys.
Sketchy business practices, bait and switch web advertising.
Had a clogged kitchen sink, searched for a plumber, and came across a Google ad for Mr. Rooter with a $79 drain clearing special. Click on it and nowhere on their site was there such a deal, but there was a $99 drain clearing special. Oh well, still a decent deal, but that should have been the first red flag. Called for details and was told in no uncertain terms that $99 applied to up to 75 feet of snaking (no problem for my little townhome), as long as the plumber didn't have to crawl under the house or a crawlspace to do his work. Again, almost certainly not a problem - just a clogged drain.
Their guy comes in, takes a one second glance at the sink and says ""I know exactly what I need to do, I'll be right back"". Goes to his van, comes back, and tells me he needs to snake the drain and it will cost $350. I told him about the coupon and he says he's never heard of that deal and it doesn't apply in my case anyway because you can't see the main from the kitchen or something along those lines. I told him what the phone rep said about crawl spaces and he said he'd check with them, but came back with the same $350 offer.
So I went another way. I put a bucket under the U pipe under the sink, removed it, unclogged it by hand, put it back, and now it drains perfectly. Took about 8 minutes and zero tools.
Aside from the blatant misrepresentation of pricing, they know they have people in a vulnerable position when they pull this stuff. If you let them walk away, you know it will be another day or two to get someone else. In this case, that means days without a functional kitchen. So I'm sure a lot of people relent and pay their unreasonable fees. I should have checked Yelp first.
Nate C.Menu pricing = rip off.
Called for a simple drain clean they advertised as $79 on website and the technician got here and quoted me $350 to run a 75 ft snake. Said it was more complicated than a simple drain clean. Really dishonest!!!! I called Drain Doctors and they took care of it under $100.
If you need plumbing work call a real plumber not a place like this with their menu pricing. You're getting gauged.
We had an emergency on Thanksgiving morning (11/22/18), requiring a drain clean out. We couldn't reach our regular service, so we settled on these people. They charged a $350 premium to show up on a holiday.
We just had a recurrence of the problem (not yet 2 months later). We had our regular folks do this one and found that Mr. Rooter had not used a big enough blade, nor gone far enough up the line. We are very disappointed and cannot recommend these people.
I used the $99 mainline cleaning coupon and was told that for this price there is no warranty on the work done. I declined the almost $300 job which included the warranty. Apparently for $99 they only poke a hole through the clog, maybe just look at their machine? In less than 2 weeks we had water behind the washer and coming up through the shower and toilet. We have dealt with this issue for 16 years and never had it backup this bad and in such a short time. The coupon is a scam, they don't do anything for the discounted price. I called them but was told no warranty, sorry. We usually use Roto Rooter for $139 they will clean out the mainline and they have a 30-60 day warranty.
$1200 in labor just to replace my water heater which wasn't even the problem. Overpriced and underdelivered...I then called the shop and their ""Manager"" Jason gets on the phone and talks in circles why he thought the $1200/4 hours $300 a hour was fair. All I asked for was since they already charged me this ridiculous amount to changed a water heater that they come back and actually try and fix the real problem, this guy offered a discount amount for his guy to come back. This company has no idea what real value is nor do they care if they actually fix the problem. The original tech who came over was nice and respectful, my issue is he didn't fix anything that was wrong and his company wouldn't back him up. I also have my Military pictures on the wall and the tech acknowledges I am a veteran but their ""discount"" doesn't apply for vets either unless you push the envelope. I'll never recommend or use again.
