JJ arrived in Florida from Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2004. He joined a Canadian firm for a project for relining municipal sewer systems in Sarasota County. The company established a division in Florida shortly thereafter. He was instrumental in the Florida operations and continued in that role until 2012.

After becoming a parent, JJ understood that being away from home for extended periods due to work was not ideal. JJ departed from the lining company and took a position with a residential plumber in Sarasota. Shortly after starting, he enrolled in and completed a four-year plumbing apprenticeship. Once he finished his apprenticeship, he prepared for and received his master plumber license.

In 2021, he established Merit Plumbing with the vision of providing excellent and convenient customer service.
