We recently hired Mendel to install two new sump pumps and backup battery system and various plumbing upgrades. Scott came out and gave us a quote and went over all his recommendations...after sending out his quote he was very easy to email with or call for follow up questions. Their crew was very professional and did a great job. We are very pleased with Mendel and will 100% use them again.

For the last decade, Mendel has always provided the best value for my money: they call ahead to let you know their ETA, they are respectful, polite, and on time; they have a wealth of knowledge and experience to guide them, and when the job is done it is always done right. When unexpected snags come up, they don't nickel-and-dime you -- they just take care of the job as agreed. You might be able to find a cheaper option, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one.

I'm updating my prior review from earlier today because the owner of the business, Mike Mendel, called me and apologized for the situation. He sent another technician out right away at no charge and offered a discount on any required services. While the technician was not entirely sure what the trouble was, he had some ideas, and scheduled someone to come out on Monday to look further and potentially do a repair. I appreciate the responsiveness and concern on Mikes part. He also followed up to make sure the technician had been out and that I was satisfied. I left this at four stars for now since I don't know what will happen on Monday. But I am going to give Mendel another chance thanks to Mike's actions.

do not use mendel plumbing ever!! no stars. i called and made an appointment and asked how much it would cost. i was told $149.00 for a diagnostic fee. i was told nothing else. when the plumber came he told me it would be $165.00 per hour for any work performed and that i would also be charged for travel to and from my home. he fixed a leaky shower and it cost me $412.50 for labor and $154.00 for parts. $565.00 for a leaky shower. when i called to complain i was told that that is ""standard."" they did not take responsibility for not telling me up front about how they charge. michael mendel (president) is taking advantage of single women who don't know home repair. they refused to rebate or refund any part of this cost. shameful price gauging.

The plumber sent (Ron) was punctual, professional and prepaired. I would recommend Mendal for any plumbing needs in the Fox Valley.

They told 1-1.5 hours to arrive. 3.5 hours later, they show up. On the phone they tell you $89 charge that will be rolled into any cost if they end up having to fix anything. If not, it's an $89 diagnosis visit. When they arrive however, they tell you it's $89 to diagnose and then $165 an hour to perform any maintenance or even make a quick phone call to the water heater manufacturer because they do not know how to fix the problem, even IF they can diagnose it.

Low and behold, nothing fixed. Don't know 100% that the problem is what he wishy-washy claimed. He didn't seem very confident..

Diagnosed the problem myself with an online manual 5 mins after he left. Parts will be in tomorrow morning. A plumbing company a co-worker is close with will be coming out tomorrow with the correct parts to fix the problem. At no minimum charge.. Good plumbing companies exist. Not here.

Great plumber showed up on time. Completely professional and did a great job. HOWEVER...Their labor rate to fix a toilet came out to over $300 per hour times two hours. They are way too expensive. Medical doctors usually don't charge as much for their services as Mendel did to fix a toilet.

After 7 years of having Mendel as my plumbing and HVAC team - I'm done with them. The last two winter visits as part of my annual program for service - the tech called me down to show me ""a problem"". In each case it was ""you have water on the floor"".....""this is leaking"". In the first instance, it was the drain hose from the humidifier which he had knocked loose while performing the service. I had him tighten in back to where it was, and the leak has stopped (12 months now). In this years visit it was ""a leak"" - which was actually just debris in a drain valve from the hot water heater. A flush of the tank, and it was fine. In both cases, the ground was dry before he came - as I move things out of the way in the 30 mins before they arrive. I've heard that these guys are compensated if they can ""upsell"" while out for a standard tune up. I didn't believe it until I had the same guy do the same ""leak"" scam two years in a row.
It's disappointing - because I dont' believe it reflects most of their employees. However, if this behavior is allowed by one person - who knows.

I opted for the 2-6 PM appointment slot, knowing that I might be the last stop of the day. It's after 7 PM and the technician just left. He called prior to arriving to let me know his approximate ETA which he estimated accurately. Because of the weather, only part of the service call could be completed. He was knowledgeable and confident about how the rescheduling would be handled in the morning. This individual was very attentive to details from the time I first spoke with him before he arrived until he left just moments ago. Because of this experience and this technician (and unless the remaining service is drastically different), Mendel will be my first choice for all things HVAC.
