This company tried to scam my 22 year old daughter into a new water heater, and then a new furnace. I got a second opinion from a company I trust and both units were not in need of replacement. Stay away.
I was also a victim of an EXTREMELY HIGH bid to simply install 2 faucets. The tech was nothing more than a salesman that was eager to upsell. I declined and will have someone else do the work at a much more reasonable price, and I will NOT be calling on McQuillan Bros ever again.
If you want to be overcharged and put on the spot, these guys are great at it.
Tom J.They were recommended to me from Home Advisor. Technician came over to repair my toilet, gave me a very expensive quote. I declined but had to pay $90 for a service call. Buyer beware!
Their service guy came to do a boiler tune-up check and the quote to fix it was so high that I decided to get a new one. Their salesman happened to be close by, so he came ASAP and sat me down with a fancy brochure.
The quote was insultingly high. It really was. I was baffled - I am still baffled. The very nice salesman said that they may not be the cheapest because they did an extra fine job, explained some technical stuff that he implied was unique to their service as well as the fact that they will put drop clothes down, clean up after themselves, etc. But all of the companies I'd talked to do all of this. It's pretty standard.
I told the salesman the price was too high and. . . I was in luck - something or other had been missed and there was now a slight price reduction.
I went with another company and the company I went with was scratching their head about the McQuillan quote as well. If you want reasonable pricing - go somewhere else.
$615 to replace a kitchen faucet that has a sensor on it! And that was after the original quote of $680. I still kick myself for giving them the go ahead. The tech did a nice job and was friendly, but for an hour and a half worth of work at that price. Outrageous...
Everything the bad reviews here say is true. We were charged over $650 to have a man here for two hours to try to fix our sink. That two hours was mostly spent writing a quote for four levels of ""fixes"" going ask the way up to redoing our entire house plumbing for 56k. Stop wasting our time. Just fix our sink. Turns out he wasn't able to, but we managed to on our own using nothing more than vinegar. Pay with credit and if you are gouged, dispute the transaction. You'll be happy I warned you.
Mr. McQuillan:
I am informing you today that you have been reported to American Express, the MN Attorney General's office and the Better Business Bureau ( in addition to Facebook and Yelp) regarding your disgraceful abandonment of a plumbing project on Goodrich Ave in St. Paul. I will be reviewing below the dates and actions by your company that failed to complete a plumbing project leaving the customer with no heat, stove and dryer for three weeks. Right from the start when you were called to look at three toilets and the possible need for new flaps and Nate of your staff asking to look at our pipes in the basement, we should have been suspicious and called off the work.
Not only did Nate try to sell us three new toilets ( which we refused ), he tried to convince us that we had gas leaks and called out Excel Energy's emergency staff to corroborate what he had found. Excel DID NOT - showing no signs of gas leak until Nate got his wrench and made matters worse on one of the pipes! Nate convinced us that we needed new piping to deal with the gas leaks - did his work making a mess and then shut off the heat, dryer and stove and walked out after requiring payment of over $2500 representing half of the total costs of the job.
The rest of the experience will be reviewed below but suffice it to say, your company is a sham both with your technicians and your office staff. A 100 year old company should know its way around the City Inspector's office and Excel Energy but it was obvious to us you could not have gotten yourself out of a paper bag!!! No contacts within these organizations to work on behalf of your customers! It was as if this was the first time you had had a plumbing project that required a City's inspection!!! I asked Madeline of your staff to have her boss, Andy, call me as well as you, John McQuillan. Never heard from your company again!!! And you left a big mess of your stuff in my basement which will be put in the alley trash!! What a disgrace!!!
Mu husband and I are spreading the word about our awful experience with your company so that no one else has to experience what we went through.
Wednesday - August 26 - Nate installs flaps on three toilets, checks for gas leaks, installs new piping which will require new regulator on outside of house, shuts off hear dryer and stove.
Tuesday - Sept 1 - Ken sits in car and makes phone calls to Excel with no success. He says he can't do anything. We have numerous phone calls with Madeline who implies McQuillan is ""pulling a permit"" which is disguise language for ""we really don't know what we are doing"".
Friday - Sept 4 - no word from McQ all week and now it is Friday of Labor Day weekend and MCQ unresponsive to numerous messages. Late Friday, Madeline returns call to say NO PROGRESS on pulling a permit.
September 4- September 14 - no response from MCQuillan having left customer with no heat, stove and dryer for over two weeks.
Look for our Facebook and Yelp comments detailing your rude and disgraceful treatment of your customers and be ready for legal action by American Express, the AG's office and us.

Bad experience and complete loss of trust. We called McQuillan Bros. for a simple task: move our water pressure tank so we could have drain tile installed in our basement. The technician arrived without the equipment needed to do the job and gave us an estimate for $2000. This is what they wanted to move the tank and then move it back?!? The drain tile company thought the estimate was way off and was kind enough to let us move our install which (was scheduled the next day!) We are so grateful Rite-Way helped us out when this company put us in a really bad position. When the plumber eventually left he gave us an estimate for $18,000 worth of work. We just wanted a tank moved and maybe a new water heater. It was ridiculous. Also a platinum, gold, silver level of service $$$. Very old school sales tactics (We offer financing!) and they essentially wasted our time. I'll update this post when we get a plumber in here prepared to do the job and not try and charge what are horrible almost criminal prices. Do yourself a favor and do not use this company. We wished we didn't.
UPDATE... UPDATE.... UPDATE...
We ended up finding a gentleman to come out and drain, unhook and move the water pressure tank and then come back on another day and put it back and hook it up. He charged us $455. He also came out at the times we need him to. Again. Do you research, get recommendations and find the neighborhood small town plumber. McQuillan Bros. didn't have our best interests in mind.
I am not one to write reviews of businesses, negative or not, but in this case, I feel I must. During a polar vortex in Minnesota, when the temperatures dipped to -29 Fahrenheit, our steam boiler unfortunately failed. McQuillian Bros. came to our house, assessed the situation, and gave us an initial estimate of $60 K (!!!) to replace the boiler, which we were forced to agree to as the temperatures inside the home were already dipping below freezing. This was later lowered to $50 K, which we are still paying. In other words, they had us over a barrel. We had either to sign a contract to pay them this exorbitant amount or risk the pipes freezing and compromising the entire house. In talking with other HVAC professionals, we learned what we had already suspected, that this was price-gouging and (really) a form of extortion. Subsequently, our insurance agency also confirmed our suspicions. When asking McQuillan for the documentation we needed for the insurance company, McQuillan refused to provide detailed receipts for the work, and would not verify what they paid for the boiler they claimed to ship in from Pennsylvania, as well as for other parts. STAY AWAY FROM MCQUILLAN! We feel cheated.
We have an old home (1905), which we've lived in for 16 years. Recently there was a strange odor coming from the boiler. I called McQuillan Bros. The very old boiler needed to be replaced. The whole crew from start to finish, was very courteous and professional. Both Nick and Mike took the time to patiently explain everything. Nothing felt rushed. I was extremely impressed with how they cleaned up after the job was done. Josh also patiently explained how to set up the new thermostat.
