My experience with recently was about a hot water thermostat which failed and needed to be replaced. Although he answered the phone quickly and proved to be fast in arriving to fix our problem, we ended up paying over $200 more than what the part costs.

I reached out to different plumbers and discovered that the same part could be found at a local plumbing store for 110 dollars. On the internet, it costs $50. McCann Plumbing & Heating billed $345 just for the part.

I realize that paying a bit more for the convenience is justifiable, but it seems a two hundred thirty dollar markup is excessive. It would have been better if the technician had contacted me to discuss the charge before installing. But, he didn't.

My advice to fellow homeowners is to find someone who is reliable.

I got a quote from the technician at McCann Plumbing & Heating for installing a boiler and hot water heater, along with a few old pumps, expansion tanks, and zone valves. Initially, the estimate was $23,000, but midway through the job, when everything was disassembled, he increased his quote to $28,800, stating that the boiler and water heater were more expensive than he anticipated and that we were getting a "Cadillac" boiler.

I checked with suppliers in Anchorage, and found that the boiler, water heater, and pumps cost around $7,000. This made me doubt Don's assertion that the boiler and water heater cost $5,800 more than he initially forecasted. Don should have informed me of the cost increase before starting the work, not during the job was in progress, when I had no choice but to let him continue.

If you decide to hire Don for any plumbing work, I suggest that you request a written, itemized quote. This should detail the material costs, his markup, his hourly rate, and the estimated hours for the job. Furthermore, it's wise to get a competitive bid from another plumber. We hired a different plumber to finish the work, and our total cost was $21,000, which saved us $2,000 compared to Don's initial quote and $7,800 below his revised estimate.
